TV Weirdness: Sony shuts off Samsung and vise versa

Something strange going on since getting a new Sony TV. It is in the room next to the Samsung, separated by a solid wall. If both TV's are on, shutting off either one also shuts off the other (but turning either one on does not have this effect).

I've even turned the Sony off using the button on the TV (as opposed to the remote) and even that shuts the Samsung in the other room off, so it's not related to the remote control signal. The Samsung does not have a power switch (on/off via remote only) so I can't try the same thing with it.

Anyone had anything similar happen before? Any ideas?

are they sharing a same hdmi device such as a blu ray player? if so it could have something to do with the hdmi control being on. that is all i got.

Yeah the HDMI CEC is what I was thinking too. Whatever piece of equipment they are sharing, you should be able to disable the HDMI CEC on it and solve the problem.

    Thanks for the ideas.

Both TVs are connected to the cable TV settop box via HDMI (and a powered splitter). The STB is an Explorer 8240HD, but I don't see anything in the online manual I found for the 8240HD, or its menus, to disable anything called HDMI CEC.
Disconnecting the HDMI cable from the Sony in the other room (even though that HDMI input was not active) does seem to prevent the shut off problem for some reason, so it seems this is on the right track. Disconnecting the cable isn't really a solution though.

The only HDMI-related thing I found in the 8240HD menus is HDMI audio, and I need that enabled so I don't have to run separate audio cables.
    Any further ideas?

You can try disabling HDMI CEC in one or both of the TVs. Might be called Bravia Sync, Control for HDMI, or Anynet+ in your Sony and Samsung TVs. If you see anything like that in their menus, disable it.

Thanks Syndil! That seems to be it. Turning Anynet+ off on the Samsung seems to fix the "ghost turn off" in both directions.
I seem to recall that I had to turn Anynet+ on in order to be able to use the remote when I connect my camcorder to the TV, but I do that far less than turning the TV on and off so I guess I'll live with it.

I'm very happy with my Samsung plasma but Anynet+ is really annoying, sometimes when I put a Bluray disk I don't wan it to change my tv input and audio! Quite a few other cases like that too. While good idea in theory in real world usage its more annoying to me and I shut it off.

If you have a universal remote that controls everything, HDMI CEC is really unnecessary. When implemented properly, it means you can control pretty much everything via one remote, universal or not, as long as it's all connected via HDMI and CEC is enabled. But if you are able to send commands to each specific component from one remote, then it's unnecessary and can cause issues like this.

Of course, everyone should have a universal learning remote with macros and an RF/IR transceiver, so no one should need HDMI CEC.

I had a similar problem years ago.I used to install Bose Life Style home theater systems .With in the box came a radio controlled
remote. One day we had to install 2 systems in the same condo building for sisters who were doors away from one another and
when one turned on their system it powered up the other. This was an easy fix,all the remotes came from the factory set the same
way and needed just 1 dip switch on the remote to be changed and all was well w/ the world.

When i turn on my LG flat screen using the remote, my PS3 also comes on. When i turn the tv off, the PS3 stays on.
Itried what you all have said about disconnecting the HDMI cable, but it still does it. My remote is not universal.
I haven't figured this one out yet! Now i just unplug the PS3 when not in use.

"The Samsung does not have a power switch (on/off via remote only) so I can't try the same thing with it."

Are you sure about that? I have a 2009 pn50 something and I didn't realize I had a switch the first year. On my tv you can't really see it but it's there. It's right on the front lower right by the red power light. Look real close. Mine has volume, change channels, menu and source.
