....why you need access to a cabinet shop.

...have the knowledge but not the tools. So easy IF !!! All trhe tools are ready to use.
...probably why speakers cost what they do. Except.......design and implantation....$$$$$$$. -
yeah, but not so... edgily employed.
Coupla my favorite speakers are made of lotsa-ply Baltic Birch; cabinets made by my friend and carpenter/cabinet maker Michael Berg

I've taken liberties here.......a turntable plinth with several layers of BB. It's like a cabinet for a turntable.
But it got painted so the edges cannot be seen.

You could fabricate those enclosures just fine with a Bosch router and orbital jigsaw.Hand held belt & orbital sanders, glue & clamps.Template & bushing techniques would really speed up production.

ooh, there's some sexy wood in this thread...
I don't recognize (?!) the turntable posted above (not that I am a big expert or anything, but I do know most of the usual suspects and that one's not ringin' a bell)... what be she? -

It started as a desirable heavy platter Lenco L75 five hole metal idler drive rescue, bought before the word got out with folks demanding lots more $$. It sports a trimmed, repainted top plate, larger main bearing and of course the heavy plinth. The arm is an Advanced Analog MG-1 air bearing linear tracker. The arm is crude and cheap compared to a Rockport or Airtangent, but they work as intended according to folks that can afford and tried them all.

That is one sweet plinth, ScompRacer. I've used baltic birch in the past on various woodworking projects, its stable and relatively inexpensive compared to most other alternatives. And good looking, although there is always the issue with edges. Dee1949's attached photo on edge is good looking. Your paint job on the plinth is the shiznay. BB comes mostly from Russia now, I believe.

Thanks dromunds! It is shot with an automotive clear coat finish, Cadillac Black.
BB is aka Russian Birch. Some folks just sand and clear the BB plinths.
Here is one from a Lenco forum friend in Hong Kong.
Space is at a premium there so he did the cutting/sanding in his high rise fire stairwell....most appropriate...lol

sort of on topic(s)
1) I have come in possession of a rather nice idler-drive Rek-O-Kut. Some of the local gurus (enablers that they are) are pulling for a "bamboo butcher block" plinth for it... further details as events warrant.
2) back on the Baltic Birch bandwagon... I somehow forgot these little guys; simple 1 ft^3 rear-ported enclosures housing Fosetx FE207E "fullrange" twincone drivers. Unlike the FE206, these drivers will work in a simple ported box. They are also somewhat less aggressive (to my ears) than the FE166/FE206. These are quite pleasant little loudspeakers; "great for tube amps" :-) This particular pair was designed and built by a local MA fellow a few years back; the cabinet sides are MDF but the front and rear panels are Baltic Birch.
...the kitteh damping is an essential tweak ;-) -
I like the earlier non-USB model portable record player....

The Rek-O-Kut's also have a following. I've seen some Lenco Heaven members have them, or used the Rek-O-Kut arms on their Lenco's. Be neat to see that plinth.Salk SoundScape 8's * Audio Research Reference 3 * Bottlehead Eros Phono * Park's Audio Budgie SUT * Krell KSA-250 * Harmonic Technology Pro 9+ * Signature Series Sonore Music Server w/Deux PS * Roon * Gustard R26 DAC / Singxer SU-6 DDC * Heavy Plinth Lenco L75 Idler Drive * AA MG-1 Linear Air Bearing Arm * AT33PTG/II & Denon 103R * Richard Gray 600S * NHT B-12d subs * GIK Acoustic Treatments * Sennheiser HD650 * -
yes, they do :-)
(especially among those of us who cannot actually afford our own TD-124) -
