Hello folk's I'm a newbie needing some help from the Pro's. I'm looking at buying a pair of 800's. My question is, would an Onkyo 55w per channel reciever do these justice for H/T, and occasional music purposes, or would a beefier amp be a better choice? The units will be in a small sized living room area. I do have a small Aiwa PSW that does a fairly decent job with bass on a Technics unit that I have now. Any thought's or suggestions appreciated! Thank's!!

for HT purposes, I would think the Onkyo 55 wpc would be ok. The RT800i's are very nice. I would consider upgrading your sub, however....

For the advice, and welcome as well! Here's my game plan. Onkyo TXDS494 for power, 245I center,, the 800I's for front,,, and 300I's for the back. What would be the recommendation as far as a psw?? I want to keep it all Polk, since I have been blown away by this 245I center that I bought! Also,,,I am on a budget, and I'm having to do this a piece at a time, installing things before the wife has a chance to notice that it's new!! ;) I did swap the old KLH center with the 245I, and so far she has'nt snapped on it. Any ideas on how to explain the replacement of an old pair of almost 20yr old fronts with the 800's???? LOL!!! Thank's for the help!

    ...tell 'er you painted them.

The 800s are a great speaker; clean and precise,
with good mids and highs, and decent bass.
With the addition of a psw350, you would be rockin'.

the TXDS494 is a good recvr (I have one), but as you know, only 55w X 5 at 8 ohms. For my apt & perhaps for your listening area, that's enuff. It drives my RT55i's plenty loud. But if you move to a larger place and/or you ever decide to upgrade to the new LSi series, a more powerful receiver with 4-ohm capability (like the 595, one step up from the 494) would be preferable. But if you're on a budget, as apparently we both are, the 494 is a great buy. Except that, by my standards anyway, it has lousy AM reception, but I don't know of any decent mass-market receivers anymore that are built with quality AM reception in mind.

Why not get the 55's instead of the 800's and get the 595 or 695.. use rt35is for surround with a cs400 center... just suggestions...

The 800's are great... I've had the 300's...but IMO..the 500's would be a better match for your 800's....but then again..for the price of the 500's..you could have 800is' all around..

    just food for thought.. :)

    good luck

Last week I upgraded from RT600i's to the 800's and the difference is very evident. The 800's have a much fuller sound. I am using the PSW350, CS245i, and RT35i's for surrounds. All of this gets power from my Outlaw 1050 receiver, and it flat out rocks. I love my Polks.

How's this for luck?,,,,strolled into Circuit City this afternoon to shell out the buck's for a new pair. In talking with the sales guy, he was decent enough to tell me that he had a pair of demos that were used last month for an in-store promo. After it was all over, I got a pair of perfect 800's for the price of a pair of 600's. I fired them up this evening, and all I can say is,,,,How can it get any better??? These are awesome! Even hooked to an old Technics unit! I can't wait to here them on an Onkyo. The wife was'nt even mad after she heard these. Thank's for the help and advice. Ya'll are alright!! I feel like a new Papa, and the line for the cigars forms to the right! Thank's again!

I've got a Denon 3802 with 245 center 800 front towers 350 sub and the 500 surrounds....holy snikies! It really rocks the house bro. All my friends are like whaaaaaaat? I can't even really turn it up loud. To me imho the sound is crystal clear, with excellent bass support. I couldn't ask for anything more. The denon is so sweet it's an excellent receiver and i recommend it to anyone!
