My memory of these was that they were pretty well rounded bookshelf speakers, but the midrange always stood out to me, and loved listening to the guitarists of the day... I just put on Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits Brothers in arms, and it brought a tear to my eye. Damn they sound as good as ever, and he was brilliant too.

Get one of those i-things and some ear buds, and that ought to cure you. I always thought buds was something to drink anyway, not to stick in your ear. :cool:

I am giving the Mon 5's a serious listen today while the GF is out shopping. These old speaks are solid.. wish i gave them 200 wpc's years ago.

The RTA 11TL's I picked up are outstanding with just 20 watts of tube power. They almost outshine my LSi setup............

I have a feeling i will graduate to a tube amp someday soon... I am diggin this M80 for now, I will need to sell off some of my stuff though

Your setup looks sick. Beware of the tube amps.... once you get your ears on them its the end of the world as you know it. You will be digging deeper and deeper into your pockets for tube money :biggrin:....

I have had many guitar amps that were tubes, and currently have a Mesa Boogie Mark V which is like 3 tube amps in one with like 12 tubes in it..

Hell yea, Mike. I love the Monitor 5's. I have a pair. I'm always amazed at the bass that comes out of these guys.

... and YES, electric guitar is one thing all these vintage Polks do sooooo well. They have a midrange grittiness/warmth that is really unique to them. Very special.

As you know, I also own the LSi9's. I think the 9's are overall a "better" speaker than the 5's. More accuracy. Harder hitting bass. But the 5's have that special midrange that just can't be replicated.... that's why so many people go to SDA's as their LAST speaker!

I can't get over how good these sound with a high power amp. my lsi 9's should be back in a week or so, and I am sure they will sound great, but for now I will enjoy the heck out of these. I am glad I kept the 5's.

Listened to them back in the 80's... I have to sell off some of my excess inventory b4 I bring any more stray speakers home:)

I find that to be the case even with the RT model up to the late 90's with the RTxxxi series. has a bit of thickness and warmth that makes music sound so enjoyable.

I agree with the high power amp. I've gotten excellent results using high power amps on all my Polks. I'm currently running a pair of Vintage Polk RT's on seperates. Sounds fantastic.

I agree with the high power amp. I've gotten excellent results using high power amps on all my Polks. I'm currently running a pair of Vintage Polk RT's on seperates. Sounds fantastic.

I have a pair of RT1000P's somewhere... I just might plug them in... I never considered them for 2 channel music.

Fire them up:cool:. I'm running 1000p's right now. I'm telling you, in my rig, these guys can compete with much higher end speakers for 2ch when given high quality SS or tube power. Their bass is probably the most musical I've heard IMO. It's not as tight as some others, but very smooth, effortless and just pure musical. Very warm and rich sounding too. Getting the volume on the powered woofers right can be tricky, but once you dial it in, it's amazing. The dynamic range in the bass is very powerful.

Nice. Let us know how it goes. Too bad you're in New Jersey. If you were close to me, I'd buy them off you. I'm always on the look out for extra pairs of 1000p's. I missed a local sale last week on a mint pair of 1000i.

I try to do everything on the cheap...Just got the coffee table ... from China thru a friend, it would have cost a g to buy it here, and got it here shipped for about 1/3 the price... but I had to buy 3 of them... the other is already sold for $650, and the other will be a gift to a friend.

Everything else is used or deeply discounted...
