Just picked up The Dark Side of the Moon - SACD 5.1 surround. This album is a classic...now hearing it on the new format was really awesome. If you get a chance, check it out. It is definitely worth a listen!

Hey Gang....Looks like I've posted a topic that has already seen some discussion...my bad. It's still worthy of further mention.

It's better in 2 channel on a killer system, actually all music is better in 2 channel. I wish the record companies would stop trying to shove multi-channel music down the public's throat. We've got a new generation that doesn't know how music reproduction is suppose to sound. :rolleyes:Political Correctness'.........defined

DSOTM has a bunch of special effects that lend themselves extremely well to a multi-channel format.
I will buy the argument for 2 channel only for a traditional band or orchestral setting where singer and instrument location takes on great import."What we do in life echoes in eternity"

I like the DSOTM SACD it rocks, now if you want to treat yourself to another multi-channel SACD that I think was made for the format get Steely Dan -Gaucho, or/ and the DVD-Audio- Everything Must Go...both are really nice. However, You will need a DVD player that plays DVD-Audio disc to hear the 5.1 multi- channel sound from EMG. All of the horn info is in the surround, and center channels.JmasterJ Polk to the Death

I've got to agree with the good Dr. on this one. 98% of my music listening is in 2-channel (including my SACDs) so my bias is obvious. Having said that....DSOTM is one of the few SACDs that I feel the M-channel is superior."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

F1nut,
I respect your opinion on 2 channel but I'm hooked on 5:1
and quad music. Dark side of the Moon is fantastic in 5:1
and I have a quad cd of Floyd's Wish you were here that
is stunning! Steely Dan's Everything must go is amazing
in 5:1. The vocals for Pixaleen are a perfect blend with the
lead vocals in the fronts and backing vocals in the rears.
The Beatle anthology dvd's are incredible in 5:1. I think
5:1 is the future of music and it's going to get better and better.
Many people didn't like stereo when it first came out, they
thought mono was the best. As engineers perfect 5:1 mixes,
they will get better and better.

I'm with F1. Been down the surround road too many times, in too many different iterations to get excited about a new "beat-all" format.
Two channels, coming out of excellent speakers that can image well and do deep bass are all I require.
Additionally, on a sort of related subject.....
Didn't I recently see a post here where someone said they are going 9.1? Is there no end to this? Speaker companies be loving this foolery.

It is entirely up to the individual to what and how they listen, I enjoy 2 channel and still listen to my CD this way, but 5.1 channel discs with their higher sampling and bit length envelop the ears like no ordinary CD every could.
One of my favorite times is listening to DSOTM SACD, theater lights only, with a cold beer
audio nirvana;) -

Pete,
Floyd themselves released quad versions of Atom Heart
mother, DSOTm and wish you were here in the 70's.
They've been transferred tocd now. Email me off list
