Wiring amp for mains only

If I use the pre out from my rx-v671 into an amp and from there to my mains, how does the avr know which siganls to send through the pre out for the surround sound? I'm thinking the mains get the full signal anyway. Or is the pre out assignable? I didn't see anything in the manual saying so. Would I wire some other way? Thanks in advance!--Brian

In most cases, you need a full bank of 5.1 or 7.1 preouts, not just a subwoofer. Normally, if using just a 2 channel amp, you connect the front left and right preouts to the amps left and right inputs then connect speakers to the amp. No additional settings is required in the receiver. Unfortunately, it appears you don't have the preouts needed to do this.HT SYSTEM-

What about the "line out" beside the zone 2 out?AVR: Integra DTR-50.4

"Line Out" and "Pre Out" are 2 completely different things.
Line Out is typically a fixed voltage signal that is not volume controlable via the AVR.
Pre Out is volume variable via the AVR."Some people find it easier to be conceited rather than correct."

This amp I'm looking at: OSD AMP300. has "speaker in". Could this be used in the same way? Meaning does the amp take just the signal and amplify it and I would be relegated to using the volume on the amp for the mains?AVR: Integra DTR-50.4

Technically you could do it that way, but it will only work for 2 channel sources. In other words, playing a 5.1 movie may not work using the line out as it's 2 different circuits. To use an amp, like we said, you need preouts, unless you just want to go 2 channel only for music and movies in that configuration.HT SYSTEM-
