I did something a little different than most on this thanksgiving. My friend and I loaded the car up with guns and went shooting.

30 shots: ruger .22 rifle
40 shots: 12 guage semi auto shotgun
20 shots: 12 guage pump shotgun
20 shots: 357 magnum using .38 ammo
20 shots: 357 magnum with magnum ammo
40 shots: .32acp ammo
40 shots: .223 ruger mini 14
40 shots: 9mm ruger

There were more guns but I forget what they were. Only the semi auto shotgun and the .22 rifle was mine. The rest were my friends. I think there were nine variations all together. Luckily we didn't get stopped on the way. I can hear it now, "expecting a little trouble there guys?"

Great experience... Who needs food??

I used to own a Ruger Mini-14. I eventually sold it and bought a Ruger M77 MKII in .223 instead, for the greater accuracy. It was a fun gun, though - great for plinking.

I have not fired a gun since squirrel season. I skipped fall turkey and never went waterfowling or out for upland bird. Bow season just consumed me this year. It's all over now, though, and I'm looking forward to getting out with the dogs and doing some good old fashioned bird hunting.

My gal did take a fine 10 point buck with the slug gun though. It is a Remington 870 12 gauge with a Hastings 24" fully rifled cantilever barrel topped with a Simmons "44 Mag" 3-10x44. Ammo was first generation Winchester BRI .50 sabot. This combo drives tacks (for a slug gun), and is a legitimate 100 yard rig.

During gun season for deer (if I go at all) I carry a Ruger Super Redhawk 9-1/2" topped with a Burris 1X duplex reticle EER scope. Also a 100 yard rig with the right ammo. I use Remington 275 grain Core Lokt JHP, or Garrett 310 grain hard cast flat nose. Boy howdy - you know it when a Garrett is touched off - that ammo rocks!

My all time favorite day to go shooting is the day after Thanksgiving. In the "good old days" my firends and I would load up their thrucks with our AR15s and head out to the county for the day.

As I type, my car is loaded w/ .22 rifles and pistols. My wife, two sons (4 & 5) are headed out to hunt some tin cans.

Just curious. What's the tradition behind this?

I don't think there is any tradition to it other than the one I started this year. From now on I plan to make it a tradition. That is how traditions begin. Maybe next year F1Nut, Doro and I will go together. Two of us may not be back...

LOL. Ahhh, you Americans. ;):p We like to shoot stuff up here too, just not each other for some reason. Although, at 13 me and a buddy had a few BB gun wars with ski goggles on to protect our eyes. That was fun. :D

I have some fond memories as a young lad walking through the wilderness with my dad in the bloom of fall colors, hunting for birds. I've never had much interest in hunting since then. My dad doesn't hunt anymore, maybe when he retires in a couple of years we'll take it up again.

Happy Thanksgiving, my yankee brothers. ;)

If you're talking firecrackers, we had those too. Of course the black cats (if I remember correctly) were always imported from you guys. They were illegal up here. Loads of fun for sure. :D

Need some advise on shooting gear. OK, I know this is an audio forum but I know there are some shooters here. Besides, ear protection is related.
It became obvious on my latest shooting trip that I need some ear protection and (from powder flying while shooting the 357) some eye protection not to mention a bag to carry ammo and stuff. Any comments? Lets keep this affordable because I only shoot about 5 times a year.

How about a pair of those old people sunglasses that they always wear when they drive....the huge wraparound style??? :D
Seriously, I wear my buddies Zeiss, but Remington has a bunch of specs, and they are cheap. I prefer a yellow tinted lens for my eyes. You may want to pick up a couple pairs, to find what you are most comfortable wearing, return the one that is not cool.

Were you wearing any hearing protection? For shame on you, if you were not....how can you expect to get NRA certified like that? ;)

I use Silencio's brand normally, but there are many brands around for that application. Check out WalMart down the street for basic stuff, but always think about hearing protection Max Daddy. Galyans down near me.
