Hi all

So I got a Philips 406 a few days ago and been working to get it up to date. TT was sniping slow so I installed a new belt today and works fine now. Still have to set the counterweight, anti-skate and the stylus force. When I play a clean record I am getting pops on the sound those it mean I need a new cartridge and stylus, the TT came with the original Philips one. Or will this be a problem of the TT not set correctly meaning counterweight, anti-skate and force.

All the help will be welcome....:smile:

Cheers
Rey

    I dont recall incorrect tracking force or anti-skating settings to cause pops when playing back records. Perhaps the wiring is loose - either from the cartridge to the headshell. Maybe even in the wiring from the TT to the phono preamp. Check your wiring and your ground cable as well to make certian that your connections are firm. If you have a Digital Multimeter, test for continuity.
    If all is well, try another cartridge and see what the results are.

    The phono-preamp may also be suspect. To eliminate the phono-preamp, try another TT, if one is available with a different cartridge.

    Good luck!

    Hey thanks for the info I will check. I don't have another TT this is a starter one I got a few days ago just getting back into vinyl. The phono-pre is brand new and I don't have another cartridge. But I guess a new one wont be a bad idea considering the one on the TT will be more than 20yrs old and have no idea how it was keep from the previews owner....

    If the phono cables are detachable, try using a different set of phono cables. To troubleshoot this issue, you will need to follow each step to get to the root of the problem, and then eliminate it.

    Good luck with your endeavor.

    I think the settings not set right could be the issue. if the stylus is not set right it could be to light and bouncing around in the groove causing noise and sibilance distortion. If its too heavy it could be digging old junk thats normally to deep for the stylus to pick up. I would start buy adjusting that properly and then work your way back. Also gently cleaning the stylus with a magic eraser may help some.

    Just curious what receiver are you using? If vintage the controls could be dirty as well as bad amp section possible. Does it make same noise on other components such as cd player? Definately get a new cartridge though and check your ground wire is not contacting something else causing the pops.

    Hey thanks for all the help. I did got the manual from Vinyl Engine. I did some cleaning last night of the head shell and the sound did improve. I will get a new cartridge as well as the one of the TT is the original.

    @THYNDYMAN
    I am using my AVR the 709 and the TT is connected to a phono-preamp I did this because the TT is more than 6ft from the AVR. I am using Monster THX Ultra 600 from the preamp to the AVR connected to the AUX input.

    ^ yeah a pretty decent cart, probably a little clearer in the high notes lacking a little bass response compared to a Shure 97xe
