Headphone amplifiers?

Just took delivery of a pair of Sennheisser HD600 headphones. It is recommeneded that a headphone amp be purchased as well to get the best sound that one can out of the cans. What I have found so far, is that the sound coming out of the cans when connected to my Sony ES receiver seems at least to be very respectable but not so when plugged into a CD player phone jack.
I'm just looking for advice or thoughts from anyone who may have had the chance to compare using a quality pair of cans when connected to a quality receiver or a special headphone amp and if the differences would seem to warrant a further expense to get the amp as well. Thanks..

Great resource for headphone goodies. Creek makes a very good headphone amplifier, check Audiogon for a used one to start off.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.
