Mismatched Specs

I think that I'm going to buy two MM104's (somewhere down the line) and I want to stick with Polk amps, too. Problem is, the specs don't match properly. The 10's run (all in rms) 500 watts at 4 ohms. The C500.1's run at 350 watts at 4 ohms, but 500 at 2 ohms. I know i can wire the two subs down to 2 ohms, the circuit requiring 1000 watts total. That leaves the amps - can i run the amps in series (i.e. one acting as sort of a pre-amp) to total those 1000 watts? or can i bridge them together, maybe? thanks for the help.

    u could always look at a different brand, get something that puts out 1000 at 2ohms. My preferance would be the US Amps 1000 hell of a good sq amp, can be had at www.speedsound.com for $610 + shipping if this is way out of your price range let us know what your price range is and we can answer you better :D

    hmmm... $240 apiece for the mm104's, allow $650 for the usamp, $200 for wiring and cap, plus $75-100 oh-**** money, and I'm about $250 out of my price range. now, considering this is future planning, i've got some time, so i think i'll run with that plan; thanx for the help

    hey dude --- sounddomain has the polk mm104's preloaded in the see through plexi polk enclosures for 159 bucks each... ya.... cheap huh? sounddomain rocks -- and they're authorized dealers just liek crutchfield so its all with warranty...

    now as far as an amp -- you can go with two polk C300.2's -- that'll give you 500 x 1 bridged to EACH sub.

    .... but they want 400 bucks EACH... a little pricey for your budget range.

    so if you do this smart you can get the two subs and the amp for $770 total.

    although if you're patient and willing to save a little longer the US 1000 will outperform both of those amps on sq...

    depends on how quickly you have to have it ;D

    quite true... the us amps 1000 will stomp a mudhole in them (quality wise, power is about the same with any of them).

    if anything -- pinch the pennies. get the usa 1000 when u get the cash, but while they're on sale snag those momo 10's for 150 each before they get rid of them.

    i've only got one problem with the usamp - it's got a subsonic filter at 36 Hz. why is it set so high? the mm104's can reach down to 20 Hz, so i might as well use that capability. the c300.2 will give each sub 550 watts bridged, but two polk amps cost $250 more than the usamp. is that lower 16 Hz worth $250?

    disengage the subsonic filter -- if there isn't a "switch" on the amp to do so -- call usamps, i'm sure they'll tell you how to do it -- call em before u buy it - tell them what u wanna do - i'm sure they'll tell u a way to do it.

    the subsonic filter is because it's a class AB amp, basically it plays full range meaning this amp can be used for component sets or coax as well as subs.
    Your typical "Sub Amp" is a class D amp made to play only one channel, in other words mono. These amps will typically only reproduce up to 200hz and as low as 5-15, therefore they are worthless for anything other than a subwoofer. AB however is made to cover the full range of audible harmonic frequencies. the US 1000 i believe runs from 15hz to 50k hz. the subsonic filter is so you can run speakers that can't (and should never) play frequencies that low, typically you'll want to set it about 80-100 if running coax's off of the amp. The filter for you is the Low Pass filter (LP) which will block out all higher frequencies from being transmitted to your subs. this should also be set around 80-100, but no higher than 100. running a sub at full range will DESTROY it rather quickly as they are not designed to play above 200hz EVER.
