Read Time

I have a Harmon Kardon DVD 101 player. It does a decent job, but it takes 8-10 seconds to read the disc before it starts to play. Is that an unusual time delay?

I believe so. My Denon DVD900 takes about the same time to begin playing a disc. The reason seems to be the fact that it needs to performs the following operations before playing a disc:
1) Figure out what format the disc is (DVD, DVD-RW, VCD, Audio CD, Audio CD-R, Audio CD-RW).
2) Once, it does that, it finds the total number of tracks (in case of audio CD) or the total number of chapters, titles (in case of DVD).
There might be some higher end DVD players that do this in half the time, but so far not seen any. Also, a computer DVD/CD drive takes about the same time to recognize what kind of disc you have inserted, irrespective of it's read/write speed. -
I believe so as in its usual for it to do that...I thought you had asked if it was a usual time delay.

I work on automotive DVD players and the DVD drive we use takes about 5 seconds to read a DVD (first attempt is to see if it is a DVD) about 9- 10 seconds to read an MP3 and about 15 seconds to read an audio CD. So yes it is normal. Also if a player is dual laser (one for DVD one for CD) then it will try one then switch to the other to see if it can read the disc.
