Best beach for family rental in the Carolinas?

Us and another couple would like to rent a beach house this summer (has to be the week of June 23). They wanted to go to Myrtle Beach but my brother and his family have rented in Atlantic Beach/Emerald Isle NC a few times and really like it. We both have kids that are 4 and 2 and we're not looking for something touristy and for partying but rather just a relaxing place with a beautiful beach that the kids can play at. Any suggestions and why you suggest it?

Thanks!

The best I have ever ran across that is right up the alley of what you are looking for is the Isle of Palms in South Carolina. Don't bother with the hotels. Rent out a private house at the Northern part of the island. Absolutely gorgeous. It's one of those places where every square inch is well kept and you can leave your $2000 bicycle out in the driveway without fear of it getting taken. It's definitely not touristy and is not known for a "partying" atmosphere. When we were there last, it was almost as if we had a private beach. The cost wasn't that bad either and if you do want to go into "town" and down a few, there is a shuttle that will take you there and bring you back without fear of getting a DUI or having someone as a designated driver. Highly recommended but I want to reiterate, the Northern part of the island within the private homes.

Carolina/Kure Beach, NC area is nice. Laid back atmosphere and wide open beaches. Close to Wilmington if you need some civilization to go to. Some nice NC maritime history as well. You can take the ferry over to the Outer Banks for a daytrip as well.

Duck and Corolla near Kitty Hawk are pretty reasonable for families, good beaches and not the spot for college break scenes!

The Carolina/Kure area is my favorite. I don't care for the Myrtle area. I've been in the Kitty Hawk area, seems to be a nice mix of the two.

I love the Avon/Buxton area on the Outer Banks. A lot less people, not much to do but relax and the beach is great.

I hear good things about Top Sail Island having reasonable vacation houses with a peaceful atmosphere.
Oh, Listen here mister. We got no way of understandin' this world. But we got as much sense of this bird flyin in the sky. Now there is a lot that bird don't know, but it don't change the fact that the world is happening to him all the same. We enjoyed staying at Corrolla on the Outer Banks. Compared to the beaches I've been to in Maryland and Delaware, it was a dream. Haul your stuff out to the beach once, leave it there for the duration of the stay, nobody messes with it. Only downside I saw was the traffic getting in on Saturday, it was pretty hairy once on the island. If you guys have 4wd vehicles, head onto the 4wd access beaches and save some money. Much less crowded also.

With kids aged 2 and 4, I'd be likely to go to the more southern NC beaches like Atlantic Beach down through Surf City, Topsail Island. Those beaches tend to be milder and warmer water temps in the summer. It's not unusual to have water temps in low 70' at Nags Head/Kitty Hawk depending on wind direction. If I go by sailboat and want to keep it there I go to Colington Harbor on the Albemarle Sound side, wife/kids spend day at beach while I work on boat projects and a buzz. Buxton/Avon/Hatteras are REALLY torn up right now after Irene and a couple of nor'easters this winter. Ocracoke is a favorite, but not much to do but vegitate.
