Liquid Tension Experiment

I'm not sure how many will read this being posted here but I felt compelled to make a post after having a incredible afternoon at home listening to Liquid Tension Experiment (LTE). Many who know me well know Dream Theater is my favorite band. I'm really big into percussion and this band produces music that has pulled me in very deeply. When I discovered Dream Theater 10 years ago, I began learning of all the side projects that members of the band had participated in. While there are many solo and side projects the band had, LTE is by far my favorite and is very unique. It's all instrumental.
I love prog rock and I'm a classic rock boy for life. Other than Dream Theater, the music that these musicians (Yes, I said musicians*) create and play is what pulls me into this genre even more. The dynamics, change in rhythm... there are so many reasons but I just love where these guys take the direction of the music.
Today a blizzard began rolling in and my day was a short one. I spent the past hour listening to LTE's 2nd disk titled: Liquid Tension Experiment II. I've never heard the entire album on my SDA's before other than the song 'Chewbacca' which is by far my favorite off the album followed by 'Another Dimension' and 'Acid Rain'. Today I just let it play and let me tell you... you have to give it a listen. Check out the three songs I threw up even. Not only is the music not your normal pop song but it's something else. It's catchy. It's rockin'. The music is so airy and just wonderful to listen to. The SDA's just make this music right*.
As I said, this thread may be a shot in the dark. But I hope some will listen, maybe post their thoughts.
* In my opinion of course

I have the first LTE disc. I just did not get into LTE like I do DT. Even though I loved the track Paradigm Shift. DT is one of my favorite bands. Been into them for 20 years or so now.

I agree about the first disc. I found more of my style on the second disc.

I have both cds,and feel more effort was put into creating the songs on the second cd.The first cd came across as a jam session. If you like drum dominated cds check out Bozzio/Levin/Stevens Situation Dangerous, all instrumental and some great songs.

I agree with your comment as well.
And thanks for the suggestion. I will definitely check into them! -
TBH i found LTE to be a bit soulless, i appreciate what they do, just seems a bit like ultra talented musicians stroking it. I get that impression with DT at times as well. However anything that Tony Levin plays on is worth a listen. Another suggestion (perhaps more on the jazz, less rock side of things) is Bruford Levin Upper Extremities. Some great stuff on thier studio album. As for drummers, you can't ask for more than Bill Bruford!Mains - Vienna Acoustics Mozart Grand

Interesting remarks. I've never viewed DT or LTE for that matter as what you describe. It's certainly a different sound from a rock perspective.Bass_Pedal wrote: »However anything that Tony Levin plays on is worth a listen. Agreed. And I will get a listen to BLUE whenever possible. -
