How far do you sit from your big screen TV? I looked it up and I am supposed to be 6.5 ft from my 50" Panny. Seems a bit close but I tried it last nigt anyway............

Oh, Listen here mister. We got no way of understandin' this world. But we got as much sense of this bird flyin in the sky. Now there is a lot that bird don't know, but it don't change the fact that the world is happening to him all the same. What I am tryin to say is, is that the course of your life, well its changing, and you don't even see it- Forest Bondurant

    I'm about 12 ft. from my 52".

For me, distance to the front speaker channels is more important than distance from the LCD monitor. So, I would be more likely to decide the ideal distance for audio, then buy the appropriate-sized TV rather than buy a TV and then figure out the appropriate distance.

    And did you like it?
I was about 12 ft from my 55" panny and moved to about 9 ft. This helped with my speaker placement. The result was better sound and better tv viewing.

Yes. But speaker placement distance relates a great deal to the size and shape of a room and how the listener is seated, so I can't really relate my experience with yours.

Sorry should have been a little clearer. I agree with your statement. For me it was a win-win. I wanted better speaker placement which could only occur by moving closer to tv. This resulted in better viewing and better sound. I was concerned about moving closer to the tv but it worked out for my situation. That was also why I was asking the OP if he liked it when he moved closer.

Of course, that makes sense. Honestly, I wish my room would allow me to sit closer. 12' is a little further than I'd like with a 52".

My best viewing distance with a 50" seems to be about 8-9 feet. My best listening distance with a 50" is with my nose up against the screen.

That said the vast majority of people do not have much choice because our rooms have limits for practical purposes, I think I would need a 65 inch TV for my room but the 55inch already cannot be centered because it too large. And most homes I go into are sitting 10+ feet from a 42 inch.

We sit between 12 to 14' feet away from our 46" TV. I have always preferred sitting even further away as the picture just looks more cohesive. We returned the 50" TV because the flaws and/or artifacts were too easily spotted. Keep in mind, we're not anywhere close to what some refer to as a "videophile". We sit further away from that on a 32" in the bedroom but with HD, there is no issue even though with that setup I would prefer to be closer.

I think this illustrate how wide opinions vary on "viewing distance". I'm about 12 ft from 70". It seems most "recommendations" are between 1-2X the size of the screen. Personally, I think the THX recommendation of 7.8 ft would be a bit close for me.

i'm about 12 feet from a 60" screen - and it seem satisfactory to me - I'm sure the THX recommendations must have something to do with the how much the screen fills your field of vision.

I remember when I got the 60" last year, I was setting it up thinking "this thing is just stupid big". About 2 weeks later I'm thinking "yeah, I could have gone for the 70". Which brings me to what the tv salesman told me "after you buy a big tv, everyday the screen gets smaller."

I think the reason we don't like sitting close to the tv is because of that voice in are head we remember screaming at us... "Get back from the TV you are to close".
I would guess that sitting 10 ft from a 50" screen is like siting 50yrds from a 40ft screen. But than again my math not be right because I come up with 54 for the answer in that other thread not 7.
