I have been wanting a SA 1000 but never seem to find one. I think this one is a step or two down from the SA 1000. I own a couple of Technics SUV909's integrateds and love them. I think this SA 700 is in pretty decent shape, and almost worth the asking price, and probably the closet I will ever come to one of the power recievers of the late 70's. Has anyone owned one of these or the SA 1000?

I guess that was the third dog in the late '70s under the SA 1000 monster and the 125 watt SA 800.

Frankly, I prefer the sound of the earlier series: SA 5X60/70.

I have an SA 5570, supposedly less power than the 100 watt SA 700 but only 1 pound less at 85 watts x 2. I prefer its sound to the 700. Not that the 700 is bad.

200 for an SA 700? Well, maybe. Sounds a little high to me. I'm sure I didn't even put out anywhere near a 100 for my 5570.

Yeah thats why I said Almost worth the asking price, if it is still around in a couple of days, I just might offer him $150. I highly doubt I will ever find a SA 1000 local, but this SA 700 sure is a beaut. Thanks for the input.

I don't think that the Technics SA-x00 or SA-x0x receivers were (are!) as well built as their primary Japanese massmarket competition (e.g., Pioneer, Kenwood, Sansui, Marantz, Yamaha, Hitachi) nor do they sound as good. We have several here, including Mrs. H's purchased-new SA-303 - up through an SA-500 (two models under yours, of course). I find them to be thin and two-dimensional sounding. As cnh says (well, implies, strongly) the earlier Technics were a bit better built and - I think - a bit better sounding as well. Current prices for the Technics massmarket receivers and amps reflect this, I think.

    Obviously, YMMV, as they say.

I bought a SA-700 last fall, mostly for the ADS speakers that were part of the package. Compared to other comparable receivers of that era that I own (Yamaha, Pioneer, Kenwood) I agree with mhardy that it does not seem as well made. It is a heavy piece of equipment and does look nice.

If you have decided to check it out (and maybe you already have) make sure all the switches and pots work well. Mine needs the full deoxit treatment. The other thing on mine is the FM seems to be working in mono only, but that might clean up after I dexoit the controls. I have used the amp section with an external tuner (with its own volume control), bypassing the preamp, and I thought the amp section on its own sounded nice.

There's a biotech company in Cambridge (MA) called Alkermes. Coincidence? ;-)
