If resale price is concern, then obviously go with a Japanese or European car, but not American.

Back in 2006, I bought a 2002 Chrysler 300m Special edition, top of the line, which cost over $42K new... for just over $13K (88,000 km on the car). Sold it last month for just under 3K with 2 sets of wheels and 200,000 km on it. Very cheap to repair, if you do repairs yourself (Chrysler stealerships are just a total rip off). Very cheap parts and very good availability. Very comfortable car. Always had something small to repair on it too.
If you want to buy a VW, I have 3 friends who got their Jetta to 350-400K km and sold those cars for more than what I sold my Chrysler for.

Just bought a 2011 Subaru in December. Good reliability, good quality car. Will see where it will get me.

Oh yeah, insurance on a 10-yr-old Chrysler was more than on a 2-yr-old Subaru Tribeca, because apparently statistics says that drivers of these cars get into accidents more often and repairs of this car (Chrysler!!!, made 20 km down the road from where I live) are very expensive. There are websites that show this accident statistics and repair numbers for insurance purposes.

I see a few comments about the Hyundai cars and felt like adding my .02

Hyundai changed drastically over the years. 07 and up they started building great cars. My GF bought a 08 Tiburon GS (4 cyl, 5 spd) July 2011 used that was owned by a dealership employee and well maintained. It has been flawless since purchase. Starts in -30C every time without being plugged in (Synthetic fluids). Very solid. Granted it is more a sports car but the car is so damn solid. Fuel mileage is awesome. Point is, give a look at Hyundai offerings bro. If I had the cash, I want a 2013 SantaFe AWD, Turbo, fully loaded in black!!!! The Genesis Coupe is bad ****. Go test drive one. But check out Elantra's, Sonata's... I'd say 08 and up.

    ...and I'm a chevy guy!
