I have posted another thread about trying to get a bigger, tighter sound out of my RTA-11ts and i have come to the realization that firstly i need a much bigger amp to drive them properly. I have a HK 3490 rated at 125 wpc into 8 ohms and i'm currently looking into amps in the 300-400 wpc range to deliver the proper power to them.

My question is this, upon reading advice in this forum i came across a few postings where some have modified the xovers and or the tweeters in their RTA-11ts. I'm wondering how much of a difference the mod will make in the speakers or will i be satisfied with the gain in headroom with a bigger amp? At some point do i just bite the bullet and opt for a new pair of speakers and take advantage of modern technology?

Does anyone have any thoughts on the 11t mods or possibly comparing the RTA-11t with a new model in the Polk line up?

Upgrading any crossover utilizing electrolytic caps and ceramic resistors, even if brand new, with high quality poly caps and high quality resistors will make a marked improvement. In short, just do it.

The RD0194-1 tweeter is a vast improvement over the SL2000. Again, just do it.

It's not only a matter of watts, but the quality of the power. In reality, you could get a 100 wpc amp that sounds and performs better overall than a 400 wpc amp.

    Sage advice, F1.

Hello, Adbl. I see that you are in Charlotte as well. If you don't mind me asking, whereabouts are you? No need to go into detail, just a general location. I live near South Charlotte and we have a sprinkling of other Charlotte area members here as well. One of which is Trey from VR3 [he does x-over upgrades].

    F1,
True it is not all about watts. I'm searching for an amp that is high current and has plenty of head room. Something in the 60 amp per channel range and i know the Parasound A21 is right up there with that spec. The speakers sound a little thin to me and i especially notice it now that in moved into a house that has a living room that has some echo to it. They never have been powered "enough" i believe. I most likely will do the xover upgrade but need to learn more about it.

    Tom,

I live in the Mount Holley area right near the Whitewater Center. I would be interested in learning more about the xover upgrade and how it would help the sonic quality. Any information you could pass my way would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
