Subwoofer and frequency response

I'm a little confused. On my Polk Audio PSW202 its frequency response is 40 - 200 Hz. What exactly does this mean? Does it mean it cannot go any lower than 40 Hz? Is this sub not cabaple of 30 Hz frequencies?

Please clarify this for me.

Actually, per Polk's published specs the *overall* response is 40-200.

What does that mean? Per Polks specs, the *overall* rating is usually the 10db downpoint. They use that point as the absolute end of any useable response that you can expect. I typically look at the 6db downpoint as being anything useable, but what do I know.

The 3db downpoint on your sub is 45-180. This is a better guage of what you will actually be able to count on your sub doing for you. Room loaded (ie IN your room), and corner-loading in said room can give you a *little* more on the bottom end in response and spl.

As far as the high end of the response, that will be defeatable with your receiver, or with the crossover control on the rear of the sub.

IMO, the 202 is an entry level sub (well - lets say 'woofer in a box'), good for small rooms where small (micro) speakers are used, and demands for pant-waffling bass are non-existant. The 202 may also be used to add a little low-end punch / emphasis to smaller bookshelf speakers.

    Cheers,
    Russ

    Overall FR is 40 - 200. the +/- 3 dB range is 45 to 180 Hz, a more
    useful spec...

is there 0 output from your 202 at 30 Hz? No, but there is no usuable output there and there's very little below 45 Hz.
    More later,

I know I've asked this same question, but I want as many opinions as possible. Should I use the PSW202 with my soon to come Paradigm PW-2200? I don't want to open the box if it is not a good idea. If I am wasting my time with the PSW202 I'm just going to try and sell it. But if it is worth a try, I will give it a shot.

What are you running for you rears? Could it be used 'back there' via speaker (high) level connections?

Got a bedroom, office, 2nd zone rig?

    russman,

I'm using Paradigm Micro V.3 in the rear. And the system is in my bedroom. I've got RTi70 up front and a Paradigm CC-170 V.3 as center. My receiver is a Denon AVR-1803.

I've was thinking about using it back there, but would it not make a diffrence it was back there or up front hooked up via RCA cable, since the LFE are directed to the sub anyway?

What should I do with it?

    Sell it.

If you decide to use it, you probably won't be happy with it and you'll end up getting rid of it anyway, especially for the setup you have. Use the proceeds of the sale towards a better quality sub.

try to sell it, unless you have another system some where that could use a little extra low end.

i dont think that mixing those subs would give you anything you would like, you could always try it to remove any doubt. if i were you, i would sell it.

    Gerald,

I would only use a 202 for a small PC setup with tiny sats,as the claimed lower end of 40Hz is still very optimistic.

Subs should be rated full power and then measured,I am sure the 202 will be a good 10 to 12dB down at 40hz what it was at 80Hz.At full output

Its not a serious HT sub and too boomy for music.

Take a look at the PSW404 or 505,these are solid down to 31.5Hz and pack a serious punch. The woofers and amps are much more capable plus the caninets more solid.

I use both the PSW404 and 505 with one of my PC's
    :p
They sound great with Totem ROKK and Tabu speakers. No boom just clean bass.
Dynaudio Contour main system,Klipsch RF HT system and PolkAudio PSW404/505 subs and RTi speakers used with main PC.Some Totem speakers too...and much more

They are going for $90-100 on ebay right now. I'm almost inclined to pick one up at that price. It's not much of an upgrade over my 8"/75W sub right now, but I suppose I could run both =)

    racer4551,

I'm pretty sure I will have to pay taxes:( which will bring around $700 CDN. This is a little pricey since I can get the V.3 for just under $1000 CDN brand new. Sorry, just isn't the deal for me since I'm in Canada but for someone in the USA it must be one heck of a deal. Thanks anyway.

    Good Luck
