Do you ever find yourself...

Listening or purchasing music based purely on the audio quality of it. As my system has grown so has my tastes in different types of music. I find myself getting music just because of the quality of the recordings.

For example, I have heard alot of good things about Botti in Boston Bluray. I have never heard any of his stuff before, just not something I listen too. So I watched the concert on youtube to see if it was worth purchasing. I was glued to the tv the entire time. The crappy youtube version still sounded great. I just kept thinking what it must sound like from a bluray. So I ordered it online. Hoping to get it soon.

Anyone else experience something similar.

Absolutely! I've tried many new artists/bands that wouldn't normally be on my radar, however on one forum or another the SQ and mastering of the album has been given very positive reviews. Blue Coast Records is one such discovery.

Yes, I've done that too. And yes, specifically with the Chris Botti in Boston Blu Ray. I even bought it after already having it on DVD - it's that good. Worth mentioning though, for full disclosure , is that one of my favorite angels, Katharine McPhee (audio and video perfection ), is one of his many very talented guests on that disc.

Another one I had to pick up is John Mayer's Where the Light Is live in L.A. - this time after seeing/hearing part of it on a sue-weet setup at Best Buy - another terrific disc. Wasn't a JM fan prior to getting that disc and now I have three or four of his CDs also.

One thing that really bugs me about these performance discs though, is that to listen to them you have to play through all the little banter segments, back stories and extraneous BS to see and hear the actual songs performed. It's interesting and fun to hear these little info tidbits the first time through, but certainly NOT every time you listen to the disc. It would be nice if they'd at least set the disc up so you could skip the banter just by skipping to the next chapter instead of making you FFwd through it each time.

I'm sort of in the same boat. The music itself has to be worth it though for me to click buy it. Great recordings get out of the way and let you hear the soul or emotion of the players' performance easier than poor ones do.

Having said that I still by music I like, even if the recording is not stellar.

No, if the music is not to my liking, I can't listen to it, no matter how well it's recorded.
If you can't hear a difference, don't waste your money.

I do this on occasion, if a quality recording is recommended. I've been introduced to a lot of great music this way and, for me, it's best to be introduced to new music with a great recording. However, if I don't like the music it has no replay-ability for me, and I may only give it a listen once or twice.

not sure if this is the same... but i was never a huge Nine Inch Nails fan, my wife is, and since i have re-started my audio journey and was burning all of her cd's to our network drive, i decided to give a listening again, starting with the re-mastered "Pretty Hate Machine".
i have to say the production sucked me in.... i had never listened on a good 2 channel system. now there are songs and things about the "music" which i definitely appreciate, but sometimes it still comes down to Trent Reznor makes good recordings.

He does. I dont know if you have ever heard of A Perfect Circle but it was a project band with him and Maynard James Keenan from Tool. Very well recorded albums with some of my favorite music

I'm in agreement here. Like the opening comedy skit of Rush's Time Machine. It was funny once or twice, but now it's just annoying the way it interferes with the opening song. I have one blu-ray (there may be more out there like this, not sure) that has an interesting concept included (though it wouldn't fix the issue previously mentioned). Paul McCartney's The Space Within Us has a "jukebox" feature on it where you take like 10 songs or so on the disc at a time and put them in any order for playback that you like. I thought it worked well, I always use it when watching that disc and would like to see it in a lot more.
