That distance will depend on how far apart the speakers are, so there is no one size fits all answer.Political Correctness'.........defined
"A doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a t-u-r-d by the clean end."

is there a 'formula' of any sort?

Your ears will tell you when you have the correct "formula". Trust them.If you can't hear a difference, don't waste your money.

Yes you need to know how far apart that they are.
The distance between the speakers is related to the distance from them.
Speaker placement is a matter of personal preference as well as a matter of acoustics the best three dimensional imagery will be obtained with speakers placed far from the walls and corners.
With speakers aimed directly at the listener this position will be 8 to 14 feet from the speakers with the speakers separated by at least 6 to 8 feet.
