Hello everyone,
I finally Got to go to Phil's house and listen to his wonderful system. I met him a few years ago at our Store and then again when I hosted a LSIM listening get together.
He has made some nice upgrades to his ever growing and changing system and I really wanted to check out the new Class D amps and Kef Speakers he added.
Phil's a Nut , he's got an entire 11.2 system going on in his basement, He has speakers everywhere but all in the right places. He also got a new then Yamaha 3010 Receiver to replace his NAD.
I brought with me some Craft Beer , Riverhorse Pumpkin Ale which I had a few cases of and stored away for Thanksgiving and Christmas as it's very seasonal and is no longer available till next season. RiverHorse Belgium Freeze one of my very favorites and Southern Tier Chocklat Stout. This Brew is 10% so we split one. This is also one of my top Stouts during the winter. Phil on the other hand cooked up some Roast Beef in the Crockpot and we had some killer Sandwiches with This nice Seasoned Salt , Horse Radish spread(Phil I need the brand Bro , I want to pick some up) and some Provolone Cheese. This made for a nice meal all together while we listened to some tunes.
Phil got this new Puppy who is absolutely adorable and spent some time with us. Very playful and very loving. I had a good time with her.

As we where listening Phil gave me the tour of the system and asked if there where anything I could tweak here and there to get more out of it. I had a few very good suggestions to start out. Phil used a Laser pointer to set up his main speakers for 2 channel listening. They for a home owner non professional where very close to being right. So before I made any adjustments , I wanted to Listen and get a good feel of the Kef towers abilities. These speakers mated with the CLASS D Mono's connected to a Yamaha receiver , followed to a Tube inline Pre to a Cambridge Dac and finally to the Source of Sonos made some wonderful music richness with full body and very even tonal balance. Very nice easy soft top end with no hint of grain or harshness. They also where not to laid back where I felt there was a lack of detail or space. The top end blended in perfectly wth the mid bass response and gave a nice warm mix all the way to the lower end which was supported by 2 awesome Velodyne SPL's. On a side note here , if you have not had a Velodyne Experience , then you are truly missing out on what wonderful clean flat accurate bass sounds like. They didn't call any attention to themselves at all. At times I questioned in my mind if they where even on.
So after a few songs I decided it was time to fix a few things I noticed in the middle. The speakers where only inches to far apart and one speakers was 2 inches closer. I made the adjustments and sat back down and listened. Now I got something I felt I was missing , Imaging. It was there but felt like it was a bit stretched. The Toe in was dead on from the get so and I only adjusted the toe after I moved the speakers. I had Phil sit in the King seat and listen to my work. He seemed very pleased with the small tweak that gave him a more fuller connected balanced sound.
After A while I decided I needed to dig into the Yamaha and see what was going on. I still felt there should be a little more weight down below. I have Installed hundreds of SPL series Subs and know exactly how they perform in many different rooms. Phil picked up one of these in line correction Bass devices that helped with Room correction and leveling out the subs. After further inspection I decided to remove this from Phils system as Phil cringed at the idea. I had to Convince him that I would be able to do a better job calibrating his subs then that magic black box could do. He was not in at first but was curious what a Professional Calibrator could do with dual subs. Side not here Dual subs are not easy to set up , Phil did a pretty good job dialing them in , I just took then the next 20%.
I got both subs dialed in pretty nicely and now for the proof in the pudding move. I put on some music for Phil and made him sit back in the King seat. Phl has this entire setup off to the right of the room and loves sitting there watching movies , drinking beer and just loving his system that he has spent countless hours and years perfecting. As he sat down I knew he was in for a treat. He has incredible subs and I wanted them to shine like they never had before. Phil listened for a few seconds and started laughing with joy on the wonderful Discovery of weight. He said" I can really feel the bass , I can't hear more I can feel more". This is the goal of any calibrator is to make the system please it's owner. I was very happy Phil was happy. He got excited and had to run a movie. He sat down and enjoyed a nice train scene and really smiled the entire time. That made me happy.

I did bring over my Macbook Pro with some High Rez files. Since Phil has a DAC with USB in , I was able to jack into his system easily. I demo'd computer music with a simple A B compare with Rush "Tom Sawyer" in 16 bit 44.1 and then 24 bit 96. I didn't tell Phil which was which but he noticed it right away. He said " Thats amazing how much more weight the 2nd one has , how much clearer it sounds". Yeah High Rez music is the bomb and I'm so very happy that in our Industry we have the ability to have it. We ran a few other tracks for Phils enjoyment and mine as His system really sounded great replaying the High Rez files.

Overall I had a great time at Phils house. We Ate , we drank and played with his system. It was a great way to spend a Sunday Afternoon.

Thanks Phil for having me over , I really enjoyed my time.

Dan, it sure was one awesome day. I'm so glad we could finally pull it off. Next up is a visit to your place. I wasn't expecting the generousity the Dan would bestow on me...for starters the craft beer was simply off the charts. The first adult beverage was this wonderful Choklat Stout by Southern Tier Brewery. It started off reminding me of a Guiness then the hint of chocalate graced my taste buds. The combination was really that good...the only downside is the 10% kick **** alcohol content. One or two of those bad boys & just hand the keys over. Next up was a Pumpkin beer from River Horse Brewery. It too was awesome with just a hint of pumpkin & the base recipe with the hops made it a killer tasting beer. The sandmiches were the icing on the cake. The sauce that takes your taste buds on a sleigh ride is by Woeber's...Horseradish Sauce. They've been doing their thing since 1905 & boy oh boy do they have it nailed. And lastely but not least is the salt I found this past summer. It's called Papa Joe's Salt & is a combination of Kosher salts, peppers, & garlic. It is a fabulous mix.

Now for some music. I was very pleased with my system but Dan picked up a few things that needed some tweaking & with every little move the sonic signature changed for the better. Dan was very impressed with the KEF's & how well they mated with the new d-Sonic mono blocks. They really are the final puzzle piece for my power needs. We played a lot of different music with fantastic results but then he pulls out his Mac puter & ran a USB cable directly into my CA DacMagic. What followed was by far the most ear opening event I ever experienced. The hi-rez 24/196 music is simply incredible. People throw the term night & day difference around way too much but in this instance it still doesn't cover what I heard. If anyone doesn't think that this is the wave of the future they had best rethink their position. And it's coming quickly. Adios CD/SACD players!!!!

To top things off Dan talked me into letting him calibrate my Velo subs his way. I was hesitant but then I said to him...hell you're the pro who's been doing this for over 25yrs so have at it. Am I glad I did, within 10 minutes he cranked the system up another few notches. It's fun to watch a pro in action...Dan really knows his stuff. Many thanks Dan.

Dan also brought me a nice speaker cable pair, IC's, Digital cable & a Toslink cable for me to keep & try in my system. I'll be doing some A/B testing for some time now. It'll be a lot of fun. And as Dan mentioned in his comments the Velo subs bring so much to the table that you have to experience it to really get the gist of what we're saying. And we're not talking about just bottom end, that's only the beginning of what good calibrated subs do the musical presentation, literally something a single pair of floorstanders can't rival. Now I have to look into getting involved with this hi-rez thingy that's on the horizon & closing fast.

And Miya our new puppy (Pit mixed breed from a local no-kill shelter) fell in love with Dan & was upset when he left. She is one awesome loveable pup to say the least.
Ah!!! what a great day. Many thanks again Dan.

We sure did! I also learned a thing or two from Dan. The man is a true professional & can talk audio all day long. With that many years in the business he truly is a wealth of knowledge. Seeing a lot of pictures on installs he has completed is incredible (a lot of very, very hi-end, hi-dollar systems). Dan is involved with the projects from start to finish, his store carries some of the best gear available & works with the customer in accomplishing their goals. He knows what to recommend & gives sound reasoning behind his recommendations. He's seen it all & knows 1st hand the BS that companies overload us with. A straight shooter that won't steer you wrong.

And since your only one state away from me in Indiana, you could swing back by and calibrate my system too ...

But seriously sounds like you had a blast.

One of these days I would love to have my system calibrated, but I think I will wait to have that done till my next AVR which will hopefully be a big step up in quality.

Curious what AVR are you rocking now? If I started a polk fourm road trip to calibrate everyones systems , I would definitely make time to stop in your place and give you a nice tune up.
    It would be fun.

On a side note , are you guys missing Manning? He is ripping it up in Denver , Looks pretty good for them to make at least the AFC Championship game or even the Super Bowl. He still got plenty left in the tank.

Still rocking the Integra DTR 5.9. I am waiting and reading up on things still and waiting to make my move. Basically it comes down to this:

I haven't yet decided if I want to go with a Pio, one of the SC's like maybe the 61, a older Marantz like the SR7005 from A4less (with MultiEQ XT), another Integra and shoot for XT32, or maybe think Anthem....

So basically still at the same point from when we talked last. You did talk me out of for now the 809.

It all costs money so until I have some serious cash to upgrade (thinking 1k or more) I will just continue to read and learn. I have made a bunch of trips to a local hi-fi store and listened to some of their gear. I am building up my network of stores around and been demo'ing their gear as much as I can .

Regarding your side note, I think we are, however timing was just right to let him go since eventually he's gonna have to retire and it was just a good point to rebuild. We aren't doing too bad considering all the good players we had to let go.

Kudos to Dan and Phil. What a great story for the New Year. I am a fan of those KEFs Phil has and the new Yammie, also like the Velos. Have not heard the D amps though. I know Phil had an awesome system there, way beyond what I run. But after hearing about what Dan did to it, seemingly minor yet significant, am thinking I may need to revisit what my sub is doing. I've messed with the L/R towers any number of times. Most recently I moved them in from the wall only 3-4" each and it made a significant difference. But I still feel there are dead spots in the room regarding the sub. I know that because depending on where I sit there is a tad more or less bass. And my lowly Boston sub (300 watt RMS/600W peak) cannot begin to compete with what Phil is running!

Good beer, good food, and AUDIO all around! What more can one ask for! Really enjoyed the review/get together!

Dan, I have a bottle of the good stuff up here waiting for you. But in all probability I'll probably just make my promise to visit your store good on my next trip to Pa. (which is where I grew up and still have family).

    Happy New Year, boys!

I'd love to come over one day and help you with your system. It would be a blast. But I will bring the beer , we can however swig at your bottle. You can cook or order some food. I'll handle the system.
Side note I really miss working with Boston Acoustics. They where really fun and had a very nice sound. The entire line was great until they started falling apart. We would get speakers in and have parts moving inside the cabinet like the magnet off the drivers.

They didn't have the same brand but I picked up some ingelhoffer which I'm a huge fan of their other spreads , they make killer mustard. It's a bit stronger then yours is so it gives it a bit more bite. I would however like to find some of yours , it's creamier and milder.

If you lived close by , I would love to come over and check out your system. I'm very familiar with Martin Logan and Anthem especially the D2. Hows your HDMI doing? Any issues? have you done all the firmware upgrades? Do you own a ARC kit? If not do yourself a favor and pick one up.

My favorite Martin Logans are the Prodigy's , they blew me away years ago when I Installed them in a 750k theater room. I'm a pretty big fan of Martin Logan , even their subs are awesome.
