Sony ES GA8ES for LSi25/LS15??

In the next couple of days I'll be ordering my LSi's! In the mean time I know my Onkyo receiver can't do the 4ohms and I've been determining my plans. It's older but I do have a Sony ES GA8ES receiver on a shelf, it always did very well for me. I have RT1000p's (which I'm finally upgrading) and it sounded great with them. This receiver states 250 W + 250 W at 4 ohms.

It seems to me that it's all I would really need for the LSi's.

Also, a question on surround sound as I don't know a lot about it. Being older the receiver has inputs for an AC-3 decoder. Does this mean it won't do 5.1 without it? This setup will be in my office and I will be listening to 2-channel 90% of the time but sometimes I like to play Battlefield 3 and use the surround then.

Yes, I have the manual but am glad you can use Google too. I am hoping someone else here has used this receiver and have some feedback on their experience.

then this should be in the manual?
my guess it's Pro-logic so no it won't do 5.1.

    welcome aboard

That's not what it says. It says,

    Dynamic power output
    STR-GA8ES:
    165 W + 165 W, 8 ohms
    250 W + 250 W, 4 ohms,

which is far different than rated output. In fact, it doesn't list the rated output into 4 ohm loads. I would be leery of turning the volume up driving LSi's. You really need a good integrated or separates.

In plain english, you need an amp pal to drive the LSI towers or risk doing damage to the speakers, receiver, or both.

Hey Kelly, welcome to club polk.

Congrats on your new upgrade, I hear the LSi's are awesome speakers.

Like these members are suggesting, it's going to take "real" power (from an amp, not an avr) to drive your speakers, and if you are just using an AVR, also as mentioned, be careful not to use too much volume, it'd be a shame to clip and possibly trash your new speakers.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, I will likely use the receiver but will send it to an external amp.
