It's Christmas eve and our furnace died when we got home this afternoon from out at the GF's parents place. I just can't believe it. I'm glad we rent but even so, it's been almost 3 hours and the landlord still hasn't called someone. Even he is unsure the issue. Going down to -29 celcius tonight.

Merry bloody x-mas to me.

I went to total electric heat this year, but had a plan "B" in the back of my mind.
I have a wood heat stove and propane heaters for back up.
Can't always count on the Electric company, and we are expecting 8" of the white stuff tomorrow, with the HIGHS in the mid/lower 20's over the next couple of days.

Not the Noth Pole, but close.......... "AntArkansas".

I hope they get that worked out for you before the night's over. Just in case you may want to borrow some heaters.

Well its been 8 hrs now. Turns out the gas valve is shot and utilities does not have a replacement. No one can service it till Thursday. Right now we are packing up some things and am unsure what the hell we are going to do till then. It's 14C in the house now and my concern is with this 100+ yr old house, how cold does it have to get before my pipes become a concern.

The words upset and frustrated are beyond what I currently feel right now. Not to mention cold.

That is horrible man, sorry to hear than Andre.
I can't offer you anything being 1500 miles away.
You might look into a cheap Propane heater at a Lowes or your local hardware store.
Buy the BBG grill size propane tank if nothing else.
Might be a little expensive for the initial cost, but you will have it 5 years from now if you need it.
Cheaper than several nights in a motel.

Sorry to hear that Andre, wish I could help!

    Thats just crazy.
Is there any truth to letting the water trickle? Being in So-Cal I honestly don't know.
Also I am sure here in the states you could deduct a portion of the rent as that would be "in-habitual".

running water will help, also you should be good as water freezes at 32 F and 0 C, so run the water and if the temp is above that you should be good, and i'd call the gf's parents back and see if they got a couch or something you could crash on, or sleep in the car with the heater on, expensive i know, but hey, its not a long drive to your car right?

Yes, let the water trickle for sure.
Cheap easy way to keep your pipes from freezing.
It will let water flow continuously thus not freezing.

Although the furnace isn't going to run until the gas valve is replaced, you can still heat the house well enough to make to Thursday.
Turn on the oven/burners on the stove, turn the furnace fan on at the T-stat, and you're good to go. The fan will circulate the heat from the oven/burners and , no, you won't die from carbon monoxide poisoning unless your house is mega-100% sealed.
Throw a box fan in the kitchen to blow some of the heat out into the rest of the house and it won't get too cold. Do turn the faucets on to drip.

We went to stay with some family on the other side of the city. Unfortunately the GF's parents live 3 hrs away...

House was 8 C this morning. Very cold. Water has been dripping and I was able to track down a buddy who has found the right gas valve. My landlord still hasn't found someone to replace it. He brought 3 small space heaters that don't do much of anything.

Hoping with my fingers crossed this fixes it. I'm beyond stressed out and this was just the icing for the rough week I just had. Trying to keep good spirits. Thanks for the well wishes guys. Just can't believe it happened to me.

Heating a 100+ year old home is not easy when it's this cold out. Hopefully it warms up a little...

Edit: Stove has been cycling but it isn't helping much. After 4 hrs of heaters and oven, we are up 2 degrees.

I would suggest you ask your Landlord for some sort of compensation given that the place is unlivable right now and thats part of the normal tenant contract.

id suggest putting some towels down in front of all exterior doors and closing off any rooms you wont use, maybe a towel there too, keep the heat in the spaces you will be using, and keep some cloths running in the drier so you can have warmth you can wear, maybe some rice bags you can microwave to put into your bed and warm it

Having grown up in Northern Minnesota it gets mighty cold, Winnipeg was a few hours away, sorry to hear thats quite the inconvience, Yes letting the water run big drips helps but in those conditions is it safe to leave the temporary heat run unattended? Sounds like your lanlord should be monitoring it while your away. Stay warm yes compensation should be considered for situation such as that.

I will deal with that after this is corrected. Right now the focus is on ensuring the house doesn't freeze and I can get the furnace up before Thursday. Should know in an hour if this valve is the culprit when my HVAC buddy arrives. Because my landlord was unprepared for this and is out of options. We have already decided that this was the last straw. We will move when the lease is up.

What shocked me more is we were left to find heated shelter for the night. No offer of heaters or a hotel until fixed.

I'm staying at the house while I run the oven and heaters that were brought in this morning. I refuse to leave the house unattended with the heaters running. Insured or not. I'm just happy it's not windy...

Sorry, that's terrible. But you're doing what you can, what I would do. Run that water and huddle together in whichever room(s) you can keep warmest with the space heaters, etc. I sympathize. We had a huge failure back in the great ice storm of the late '90s in Maine. Frozen power lines took out our furnace for a few days, my daughter was just a few months old and the house temps were falling rapidly. I was most afraid for the "baby". We got power back with a couple of days but many were powerless for a week.

Hang in there. And let's hope the problem is resolved soon! Couldn't come at a worst time.

Leave the cabinet doors open beneath any faucets, that helps keep it from freezing to, good luck.

Unfortunately the valve didn't solve the issue. Talk now of the board being the issue or possible replacement. It's been way too cold to stay at the house. It's sad that we can't spend our Christmas at home.

I woudln't worry about the pipes. It is his heater, and they are his pipes, once you have notified him about the heater not working it is on him. Especially if his isnt helping you out at all.

That's very kind. Really unexpectedly kind. However, I can thankfully take a rain check as we have heat finally. Would love to check out Chicago sometime for sure. Closest I'll get is back to Minneapolis again this February.

Heat was fixed at 11. However, furnace tech pulled a rookie 101 move and never cycled the furnace with the stat. Just the blower kill switch. The furnace runs constantly, as in the blower moves air. Everything else is working fine though. Hope my motor doesn't burn out tonight...

Hopefully that's taken care of early tomorrow. Feels nice to be home and will feel nice to sleep in our own bed. I'm exhausted to say the least.

To be honest Andre, Tony's "tunes" aren't worth the drive!:cheesygrin:
You could prolly rent a large (or small) industrial heater for next to nothing considering!
Prolly rent a large propane tank also if needed.

But I would not count on Tony's system being "Warm".

    Just ribbing ya Tony!

PS: My friend has a LARGE hourse and has a large propane heater on a "large" propane tank, completely portable, it has wheels, roll it where you need it, and you will be turning that bad boy down pretty quick believe me!
