Driving them SDA 1B's (which would you prefer and why?)

Hey all. I am currently using the Onkyo TX SR805 to run my 1B's and am thinking of either adding a Parasound HCA1200 amp or change out to the Yamaha CR2040. While the Yamaha receiver only has 120 wpc I am reading that this 120 watts are more powerful than the 130 WPC that the Onkyo delivers?? What I do know is that I like it a little louder at times than the Onkyo will permit, as it goes into protection when I crank it up to where I want it sometimes, and only occasionally do I need that kick..but to no avail if it shuts down!! I am told that the Yamaha will not do that and the sound will be more powerful?? Hard to understand that if the watts are 10 less, but I am open minded to it. The idea of adding a amp is tough, as there is nowhere to place it as I see it now?? I'm sure the majority will say the amp is the way to go, so looking to see both sides of opinions and or suggestions. Thanks and I haven't been steered wrong yet,,no matter how brutal at times...(you know who you are TB) Thanks and Merry Christmas everyone. Great group here, that's for sure!

Id go Parasound Johnny, one of the best upgrades for me was adding a amp.More punch all around.

Merry Christmas to you as well, THJ. Have you ever considered going with a tube amplifier?

Don't know a whole lot about tube amps Tom, besides I hear they sound great! When I get back to my house tonight I will give the Onk an honest listen once again. Kinda up in the air right now."if it's not fun, it's not worth it & remember folks, "It's All About The Music"!!

Fair enough. I know full well that a tube amp wasn't one of your two choices but from experience, the highly modified SDA 1C's I had sounded rather fantastic [the best I had ever experienced] on a tube amplifier. Just thought I'd throw that option out there to consider.

Johnny, does your Onk have pre outs? I cant remember. If so, I can bring over the 555, and you can see if 200 wpc is gonna do it for those 1Bs.

Forget any receiver think AMP only no receiver will do them any justice

Yamaha rated at 120 watts into 8 ohms, but only 140 into 4 ohms. (IHF method) I'd call the Yammie amperage-limited. The 1B is a nominal 4-ohm load.
By comparison, the Parasound HCA1200 is rated for 200 watts into 8 ohms (not all that much "louder" than 120 watts--you'll want to do some research on converting "watts" to "dbw"), but the rating into 4 ohms is a full 150% more than the 8-ohm rating--300 watts. The amp is less amperage-limited than the Yammie. 1Bs will appreciate this.

You have entered the 4-ohm speaker arena. 8-ohm rated power specs are now all but meaningless.
Keep in mind that both of those options are old enough to perhaps need service work--a "tune up" if nothing else. Lord knows my old JVC receiver got quirky as it aged. -
Is the 805 getting hot? You know I drive my 2.3tls with an 808. It doesn't get hot it sits on top of a wood stand nothing on top. I have a Carver TFM-25 that I used to use when I had a separate preamp Carver CT17. When I got the 808 I hooked them up they sounded great so I said why bother, but the 2.3tls are 8 ohm compatible.
If I was going to buy a new amp it would have to do with how much money I have or wanted to spend but I would buy a new one and it would be 300 wpc.
Just remember that driving 4 ohms speakers will make it run hotter and that may be why your shutting down. It's hot in Texas and I have a receiver out in the garage with a 120mm computer fan on top, heat is the silent killer.POLK SDA 2.3 TLS BOUGHT NEW IN 1990, Gimpod/Sonic Caps/Mills RDO-198

Thanks and That would be great. I don't have the correct cables to connect the amp to the receiver, so would need those as well. Just say when and i'll be ready! Is the 805 getting hot? Not sure what the Onkyo is set for 8-6 or 4 ohm?? Maybe that's the problem?? Thanks"if it's not fun, it's not worth it & remember folks, "It's All About The Music"!!

THJ,
Do you have your 805 connected to a TV? You can go into the set up menu and see if the 805 is set for the lower ohm rating. I have the 876...which is very similar to the 805. When the 876 detected my 4 ohm speakers, it essentially self limits the power output so the 1xx watt rating is cut to around 55 - 60 wpc from what I remember. So I don't think you are getting 130. This is why I really wanted the amp you had which was designed for 4 ohm rather than limiting output for 4 ohm, but also like you...had ZERO idea how to fit it in physically or even worse...find an electrical source. So I am trying the onkyo 5007.
Hooking up with deronb1 will give you your answer. Have fun! -

I bring some cables. After the storm passes through! Merry Christmas! -

Actually, I think the 555 is closer to 300wpc at 4 ohms.

If those are the two choices, jump on the Parasound; ignore the Yamaha.

Almost certainly the difference between rated power into 8-ohm load versus rated power into 4-ohm load. If you maintain the same voltage, the current required doubles when driving the 4-ohm load. If the Onkyo isn't rated into a 4-ohm load, (and that's the way I remember it being described--8-ohm specs and 6-ohm specs, but no rating for 4-ohm power output) it's going to mess the bed when you run it into a 4-ohm nominal speaker and turn the volume up.

The onk was set to 6 ohm(didn't see a 8 ohm option) and now set to 4 ohm and man, what a change. Blasting right now and not shutting down?? Love it."if it's not fun, it's not worth it & remember folks, "It's All About The Music"!!

Sometimes you find what you have will work you just have to dig a little deeper.
How loud are you playing that thing?
Are you one of those guys that sound like they are at the front door but they are over on the next block?
If so start watching ebay on buy a couple of extra driver when you see them show up :cheesygrin:tophatjohnny wrote: »The onk was set to 6 ohm(didn't see a 8 ohm option) and now set to 4 ohm and man, what a change.
