looking for recommendations for a good subwoofer for my Dahlquist DQ 10 speakers

I am looking to get a good subwoofer for my Dahlquist DQ 10 speakers because, while the DQ 10s do have great imaging and an incredibly clear sound, they do lack some bass.

Can anyone recommend a good subwoofer?

I know nothing about subwoofers.

My budget is around $300 which, I know, is not a lot for a good subwoofer but I am looking for either new or used so hopefullly there is a decent subwoofer in my price range.

Thanks.

Hello, pglbook. Just out of curiosity and nothing else, is this budget set after the X-over upgrades? While I do agree with you about them being a tad light on the bass...

I am using a HSU STF-2 subwoofer with my DQ-10's.

I bought it for $200 new on a closeout at Circuit City. Very musical, not boomy and integrates well with the DQ-10's and DQ-20's.

Currently looking for a used HSU STF-3 as an upgrade.

Thanks, treitz3. The crossover upgrades are my first priority and the subwoofer is more of a long term wish I guess. I definitely want to go ahead with the crossover upgrade. My budget (like everyone's) is limited so I would not be able to do everything I'd like to do to the DQ 10s (new crossovers, subwoofer, etc) and there also comes a maximum dollar limit as to what one would want to spend on 30+ year old speakers, even DQ 10s. The DQ 10s only cost me $250 and its ok for me to put a few hundred more into them but at some point there is breaking point, where one wonders whether to spend a lot of money upgrading older speakers or spending that money on other (more expensive) speakers that may not require as much of an upgrade, etc. That is the eternal debate and I know there is no easy or correct answer there. It is a matter of preference, taste, and, of course budget. I definitely would like to do the crossovers on the DQ 10s, though. I think that will help them a lot. I got the DQ 10s a few months ago because I have heard so much about them and, to be honest, I was disappointed with them. Yes, they do have great clarity and imaging, as everyone says, but I found them rather flat and lifeless. Not very lively at all. And definitely lacking some bass. I am hoping the crossovers will improve them and bring them to life. Thanks for the response.

Dahlquist made a sub for the DQ-10 speakers back in the day. If you could find one, it would be a nice match, and probably within your budget. I also agree that once you upgrade the crossovers, the speakers should sound much better. $250 was a steal for those.

I had DQ10s and used 2 Dahlquist "low bass modules". The LBMs were ho-hum in performance.
    I recommend Velodyne or Hsu.

I know where there was one of these a month or so back, it was at POP's resale in LExington, KY. HE sold the DQ10's he had but not the matching bass module.

I also have the original DQ passive subwoofer and crossover but prefer the HSU.

The title sums it up pretty well. I'm looking at making some custom cables, mostly RCA, for my rig and would like some input on where you guys buy your bulk cable, connectors, etc. Any input is appreciated. Thanks
