So, I'm driving down the road in my work truck and a song comes on. It's one I've heard many times throughout my life but never like this. What is my default when I don't know what song is playing? Call Lightman1 [Russ] and let him listen to it. Many, many times, he just tells me right off the top of his head....I refer to him as my very own walking, talking encyclopedia of music. If I'm stumped, he's my go to guy. If he can't nail the player(s) or the band, 99% of the time, he knows the title of the song or something about the song [like the musicians or lead singers] that as soon as I get home, I just Google what he told me. Finding out what song, version, band and the album it's found on usually takes no longer than 2 or 3 minutes to find and order. Case closed.

Here's the problem: We are both stumped on this one.

This is what I can tell you. It's definitely an older song that has the "Charlie Brown" theme to it. We all listened to it as kids while growing up watching the Peanuts. I do know that the basic theme has been played or incorporated into some songs but that's not the version I'm looking for. This was a longer set with no words. I would estimate somewhere around 5 or more minutes long. No singing, just instruments playing. I distinctly remember hearing a cymbal being brushed while the piano was doing it's thing. This version was more of a jazz type recording than anything and for all I know, it may have been much longer than 5 minutes.

Oh, and it's not Charlie Brown...Charlie Brown...He's a clown, that Charlie Brown from the Coasters.

No singing, just a really good jazz type version of this song. After a bit of research, I was able to find this on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linus_and_Lucy
appearing in many of the Peanuts animated television specials. Named for the fictional siblings Linus and Lucy van Pelt, it was released in 1964 on the Vince Guaraldi Trio's album Jazz Impressions of a Boy Named Charlie Brown. A Charlie Brown Christmas introduced the song to a television audience of millions of children beginning in 1965.[1] Since that special, the song has introduced most of the Peanuts TV specials, with the exceptions of the specials and other TV programs produced between 1979 and 1992. It is one of the most recognizable pieces by Vince Guaraldi, and has gained status as the de facto theme song of the Peanuts franchise.

The song was played to the crew of Space Shuttle Endeavour as wake-up music on Day 2 of the STS-123 mission on March 11, 2008. It has been used as background music for The Weather Channel's local forecasts since 1999,[2] and in advertisements for insurance firm MetLife. This song is also often played on radio stations in the United States that go to a Christmas music format during the holidays; although it is not "officially" a Christmas song, its appearance on the soundtrack for A Charlie Brown Christmas has solidified "Linus and Lucy" as a holiday favorite.

But......I also see that there are many different versions of this as well. here's the list below, also off of Wikipedia...
David Benoit on Best of David Benoit: 1987-1995, Here's to You, Charlie Brown: 50 Great Years! [1]
Dave Brubeck on Quiet as the Moon
Built to Spill on Built to Spill - Sabonis Tracks
Cyrus Chestnut on A Charlie Brown Christmas
Stuart Hamm, as part of "Quahogs Anyone? (119, 120 Whatever It Takes)" on The Urge
Gary Hoey on Endless Summer II Soundtrack and on Wake Up Call
JFA (Jody Foster's Army) on Mad Gardens EP
Less Than Jake live at the Alachua Music Harvest on January 15, 1995
Wynton Marsalis Septet on Joe Cool's Blues
Dave Matthews Band at various concerts
Rhythm Pigs on Rhythm Pigs & I'm not crazy...
George Winston on Linus and Lucy - The Music of Vince Guaraldi
Carbon Leaf within the song "Torn and Tattered" at various concerts
Andrew York on Perfect Sky
Game Theory on The Big Shot Chronicles
Danny Gatton on In Concert and Hot Rod Guitar
Buddy Emmons on One For The Road
Carol Lou Woodward on An Evening with Carol Lou
Butch Taylor (as part of Dave Matthews Band) on "Live Trax Volume 1" and "Live Trax Volume 3"
Belle and Sebastian at various concerts
B?la Fleck and the Flecktones on their 2008 Christmas album Jingle All the Way
The Ergs! on Hindsight Is 20/20 My Friend
Asylum Street Spankers on A Christmas Spanking
moe. on Season's Greetings from moe.
Jon Schmidt on "Bonus Tracks"

Ugh. I feel like Charlie Brown himself when I say "Good grief"! How in the heck am I supposed to know which version is the one I heard? There wasn't any lyrics by the time I hopped into the truck and heard it jamming away, so I'm taking for granted that there were no lyrics at all. With trying to verify which version I heard last night, I popped onto Amazon to sample this song. Unfortunately, they had no sample of anything off of this album and the cost was around 35 bucks to be shipped to my door. I'm real hesitant to spend 35 smackers to find out that I bought what I wasn't looking for [Though I may have to after all is said and done].

This is the one I found that I believe to be the version I heard http://www.amazon.com/Charlie-Brown-Christmas-Recording-Television/dp/B000000XDJ and I see the price just went up 3 dollars since yesterday.

Well, this is unfortunately all of the information I have to offer. This may be a long shot but I'm betting that at least one person on this forum knows which version I may have heard yesterday. Thanks for taking the time to read this and Merry Christmas to all.

Check out HDtracks.com. The Vince Guaraldi Charlie Brown Christmas Album they have for download has samples of songs, one of which is "Linus and Lucy."

To compound your quest, though, there are a number of different Guaraldi/Charlie Brown albums, most of which aren't as readily available as the Christmas album.

Thank you, sir. I will have to check that out. Who knows, I might get lucky.

    That's what I was afraid of...DOH!

I was afraid someone was gonna ask that. I honestly have no idea. Usually, I'm able to find what it is I'm looking for so I didn't even think about jotting down that tid-bit of information. Hindsight is always 20/20 and I'll be sure to note that as well in the future. It might have made this quest a WHOLE lot easier.

I have zero doubt you heard the David Benoit version. It has become the standard play version since it was released.

Hot diggity dog! I do believe that this is it. I could have sworn it was longer than 3 minutes but it does have the drum being brushed, no singing and I do remember the piano being played at that same tempo. Unless there is another version of this same song that is very close to identical but longer, this is it. Sorry, John but that wasn't the one.

Thank you, dkr919. I believe this was the one you were trying to lead me too.

Well, daggum Syndil. Now you have me doubting myself. That version has more of the Jazz that I heard and loved but the tempo wasn't as fast. Good grief! I will say this, I had never enjoyed this song as much as I did yesterday, hence the inquiry. I'll keep digging.

    ^^^ Hehe, no. That's not it. ^^^

I think that you and John are onto something, though. David Benoit's Linus and Lucy [the first one you linked Sindel] was closer to what version I heard than anything else so far. Now just to find which one...

I bought that (the Vince G. Trio) Christmas album on vinyl this year. 180g green vinyl

Nothing like an audiophile album of charlie brown songs!

IMO it is a wonderful recording. Nice, relaxed, beautiful music.

Do you have a cassette deck? I have an old Ford/JBL demo cassette with "Linus and Lucy" on it. From what I remember, it did have a jazz flare to it. I could send it to you.

Now there you go gettin' all technical on me. You are correct, though and I'll have the wife spank me silly tonight for that slip up.

Nope, no tape player. Haven't had one of those for some time now. Thanks for the offer, though.
