I recently got a Yamaha YP 701 turntable but it lacked a headshell and cartridge.
Can anyone recommend a good cartridge for this turntable?
The YP 701 is a semi-automatic belt-driven turntable Yamaha built around 1974.
It is a solid turntable and I'd like to get a nice cartridge for it (well, nice in the $100 range if that is possible).

Personally I would go to needledoctor.com and give them a call to get their thoughts on whats best for that specific turntable...

I am a Turntable n00b myself so I cant give you any solid recomendations.....

Consulting the Needle Doctor is great advice on this. Having said that, ones that I would put on your short list in that price range would include the Sure M97XE, Denon DL 110, and the Ortofon 2m Red. Sounds like you are also going to need a headshell and headshell leads. This is a great one for the money, complete with quality headshell leads; http://www.lpgear.com/product/LPGZHEAD.html Do you have a pre, reciever, or integrated with a built-in phono section? If not you'll need to pick up an external phono pre.

Thanks. They are all good ideas. Someone else (on another site) had mentioned that he had his YP 701 with a Shure M97XE, as you mentioned, and he thought it was a great combo. I wanted to see if there were other cartridges recommended as well and get a consensus. I will also give Needle Doctor a call. I bought an original headshell for the YP 701 on ebay recently but another problem I now have is that the original head shell lacked the cue lever (finger lift) and I do not know how I will find one of those.
The turntable will be hooked up to my Yamaha CR 2020 receiver.
    Thanks again.

I have an MX97E in my Thorens. Great cartridge.
