I have a few friends that want to get an entry level front projector for $1000. They like the 9 foot picture with my NEC 1000, but it costs $4000. I think a $1000 projector used with a 5 foot screen would look pretty good. Does anyone have any positive or negative experience with any of the following $1000 projectors:

In Focus X1
Epson PLS1
Toshiba TLP-S10U
Mitsubishi SL2U

Any other recommendations?

Also tell me the screen size that was used.

Thanks for the advice.

Peter

Demoed the X1, but the DLP rainbows killed it for me. Went with the Panny 200u LCD with an 80" DIY gray screen. You can see screen shots and other pics on my web site.

All my friends and family have said the PQ is just as good as my old ISF'd Mits RPTV, just much bigger. Not too bad for $1,100.

We have the infocus X1, along with various other models, in our conferance rooms at work. It seems that the "screen door" effect can be seen from about 10 ft. on a 4-5 foot screen.

That said, those things last a good while. I think we have only replaced 2 out of at least twenty in the four years I've been here and those things are going on and off 24/7. Each year her is probably equivelent to about 5-6 in home.

Somethings amiss if that's the case. I have an 80" screen (6'x3.5') and at 9' from the screen I only see SDE in bright scenes and it's minimal and no SDE from the back row at 12'.

I'm surprised that you would see the SDE 10 feet from a 5 foot screen. That isn't very good.

    Thanks for you input.

This is off of compter sources as well if that makes any differance toy you. With the image is stationary it is a lot easier to see. I have yet to see the rainbows though.

You most likely will not see rainbows unless you have rapid movement with high contrast and a dark room.

Sounds like your seeing the PJ's in a business type setting vs a HT setting and calibration is completely different between the two.
