Sub placement

I got my new HSU VTF-3MK4 sub yesterday and have a quick question. Hopefully I'll get time to set it up tomorrow but was wonderingabout the placement. It's a side firing sub and I was wondering which direction should the woofer face?
Thanks Ken

Some people say it doesn't matter which direction the woofer faces since bass is omnidirectional. Some will tell you the woofer should face you or at least away from walls/obstacles for cleaner more articulate bass. You should experiment with the woofer direction and figure out what works best for you.

As for placement the best way to find optimal placement would be the "subwoofer crawl." Put the subwoofer at the listening position (height considered), crawl around the room to find where the bass sounds the best, then place the subwoofer in that location. The idea is the bass quality will be the same at the listening position and where ever the subwoofer is placed in the room.

Let us know what you think of the HSU after it's all set up.

It should face in the direction that it sounds best to you.

It is best in or near a corner.

It is best in or near a corner.
For corner gain, yes. But corner gain can also result in the most room nodes being excited.

HSU usually includes instructions for the "sub crawl" in their manuals. Follow those instructions.

I was just curious if there was a protocal for the woofer, my current pos sub has a downfiring woofer. The sub will have to sit near one of my front speakers, it's in a living room and can't have cables running everywhere. So I will make it sound the best that I can from that position and it really doesn't matter which direction the woofer is facing.

    Thanks All

I had my much older version of that sub in a corner, sounded great. Now I have it in the middle-ish of the room as an end table with the amp in my cabinet and speaker wire running through the baseboard, sounds great. The frequency response on HSU subs is very flat, so unless you have some wicked nodes in your room, you should be good no matter what.

I can't imagine that you will be anything less than blown away by that sub, but please do kiss and tell.

So when you do a "sub crawl", should you put the sub up on the chair/couch that is the primary listening spot, or move the chair/couch and put the sub in its place? Does the sub being on a thick padded couch change the sonics for the test?

I'm limited to where my sub can be, when I titled this "placement" wasn't the proper term to use. Anyway I have the sub connected but am waiting on some more equipment before I run audyessey again, but as it is it sounds so much better, very subtle and precise. Can't wait to get it set up proper.

Thanks all for your help, Ken
