How to test sub pre out?

I think my old AVR is not sending the sub a signal. I've tried a different cable and a different sub. Using a test DVD that sends sound to each of the 5.1 speakers.

Is it possible to test the sub pre out with an ohm meter? If so, what setting and what am I looking for?

    If you played a constant tone that would go to your subwoofer, say 40hz, you should be able to measure that as voltage at the output of the AVR.

    Right, and I'm not sure how to set the multimeter. Should it be to ac or dc or ohms?
