That Modi is the Schiit for $99! It looks like they're shooting straight at HRT with a USB-powered DAC.

This thread wouldn't be nearly as long as it is if people weren't making fun of Schiit's name.

I guess people just have Schiit to say.

I just ordered the Modi DAC. I will be comparing it directly to an HRT Music Streamer II, which I figure is the closest competitor spec-wise to the $99 Modi at $149. I'll also compare it to a MF VDAC-II, which is closer to the Bifrost's price/performance league.

I will post my impressions here.

It won't work will it? It looks to only have USB in like the HRT music streamer, and the SB only has digital optical or coax outputs right? Otherwise I would be tempted to do the same...

    USB as well, I believe!

Wait on second thought, that may just be for input IIRC.

Yes the USB on the Squeezebox is for like a flash drive/external drive.

You need to just suck it up and get a Benchmark DAC1 HDR and be done with it ... Just kidding mang, but thats the pre on my game ending wish list

hmm, so far the sound tends to be a little on the bright side for me. Not sure if its the DAC or the amp. While its better than the DAC of my computer its not the final chapter in what I would be looking for.

I'm getting a pair of HD600's here tomorrow or Thursday and will be able to listen some more. Will also try out the tube stage on my other DAC in the main system to see the differences. So far for the price its really not bad. I do have to say I do enjoy the difference it made when listening.
