What's "wrong" with it? I have the previous model, 2265 (no . And let me tell you, if you have some Monitor 10s, get this hooked up immediately! Incredible "synergy" in the right "room"!
Not being a Marantz aficionado, I don't know, other than cosmetically, how the two models are different. All I can say is mine sounds fine, no need for any tweaks at this point in time.

Looks identicaal to the 2252B in my office rig. Too lazy to look up the spec differences. I'd be curious what the restore runs you. I've owned mine since new. I'm sure it could use a once over.

That one's from ca. 1977 or 78; the earlier "B" models had the blackout dials.
FWIW. I am not a big fan of the Superscope-era Marantz sound... but they certainly look impressive in a "more is more", 1970s way ;-)
Here's an artist's conception :-) of the earlier, blackout-dial Marantz, from the cover of the (AFAIK) one and only catalog published by Gordon Miller Music in Baltimore (Towson and environs), MD ca. 1978....

At 30 + yrs old im having my tech check it over. A couple light out, need. Minor detox, boas and have the fm aligned." A GOOD GOING THRU" And see whats up and whats down. And will get advise as to what or if anything needed.my tech has used a 2238B for his referance amp on his bench for a bizillon yrs he says. Has all the light bulbs and extra pots and many yrs exp. on them. So we will see! Or HEAR what all the buzz is about these things. Remember drooling over them in the late 70's couldnt afford one then.this one is in great cosmetic condt. Suppose to be one owner?????? Heard that before! But she's not been beat up at all. Even has cob webs behind the glass. Owner says he hasent turned it on id 20 yrs???? Hense the trip to the shop first! LOL.Main Rig:

Vintage Polks and vintage Marantz are a match made in heaven... -
Agreed ^^^^
Try it out on the 5's and look for some old 7's to go with it. It will blow your mind what a hundred buck pair of 7's and a 30 year old receiver will sound like. Then play some vinyl....lol !!!HT SYSTEM-

Yea im still up just sitting here, hooked it up to my 12c's and am drifting down memory lane. Kinda forgot how simple listening to music used to be, not thumping base that will loosen your teeth but a sweet smooth warmth. Kinda like slipping into your favorite slippers and robe on a cold winters day and feeling all warm inside.is it more dynamic, accrurate, than my other equip listed below, hell no but..... It does something all that power cant do! It warms my innerds!!! Think i could listen to this all night ( just like i used to when this amp was new) maybe those days are not lost after all.havent listened to FM like this in many years! Makes me want to unpack my pioneer rt707 and thread some tape. But i digress. LOLMain Rig:

All ot needs is a surface cleaning, pots cleaned( no scrachyness) just while its in the shop might as well clean them. 2 bulbs need to be replaced ( my tech has a full set of originals so i will do all of them). Will have it benched and adjusted and bias's set, all swiches cleaned and am/FM adj. for any drift due to age. Just a complete service. The unit has no issues i can find. No machanical or sound issues. Just got lucky and found a really nice one!Main Rig:

Ok, first that Marantz is a very good receiver and you can use any old or new speakers!!! I had the 2238B long time ago. these machines are very well made. What you should do is replace all those electrolytic caps on the pre-amp and amp board, I would suggest to use Panasonic FC 105c and after that adjust bias and dc offset. also check for bad solder on board, open the relay that is on the amp board and use small file to get those contacts clean, clean all of those potentiometers and switches very well. all this is to get a trouble free receiver for a long time. if you know how to use a multimeter and know how to solder (basic electronic) you can do all of this at a very low cost!Make it simple...Make it better!

I like the sound of the series without the "B", i.e. the 2270, 2235, etc. That said I have a 2238B that does sound nice and has been upgraded with new caps, LED lights, and I can't remember what else my tech did to it. My 2270 driving B&O S45-2 speakers is one of my favorite late night relaxing systems.DKG999

I have a tech that works on all my vintage gear, i will let him go thru it
He knows this brand very well. I dont want to change the cap on this unit unless they are out of spec. (hate to change its sound). This unit has been stored very well and dosent seem to have suffered tje ravages of time amd many owners. Short of the couple of bulbs it seems damn neer perfect sonicly. But it iis 30 + yrs old. I dont want to mod this at all. I have and have had many vintage pieces over the yrs and i think i may have found a cherry here. I plan on keeping this original.Main Rig:

Well, if you "MUST" keep all those 30 years+ caps, ask your technichian to check all of them with an E.S.R meter, some of them He will have to take them out to get a correct reading! all electroiltic caps "dry out" with time and drift their value. Changing those 30+ years old caps with Panasonic FC caps will "bring back" that nice sound of those Marantz receiver. I worked many years fixing amps, receivers, TV's, DVD players, VCR etc. and I have build many amps. so I think I know a little bit what I am talking about here. Take a look of my diy amp that I build long time ago:

I fully understand your post as i have some exp. With vintage equip. My point is i dont want to alter this piece anymore than ness. The gentleman that worls on my equip has been doing it since it wasent vintage! LOL (retired macintosh/parasound field tech) see mod thread on my gda 700 dac he just finished. I trust him compleatly. He has a supply of original parts caps inc. for this unit so i may be able to restor some things with original parts. ( my preferance) caps not so much. Ofcourse they will be tested proppery and it will be gone through with a fine tooth comb, i just dont want to try to make this something it isnt. I havrnt seen many old pieces this nice in a while and want to keep it as nice as it is without changeing its "charactor" (which is what i like about it) .Main Rig:

I'll agree with lanchile's perspective. Changing out those caps is cheap and you have a guy readily available. Plus you want to avoid a leaky one that may do more damage. It won't change the sound characteristics, just make it more clear. I love the tone on those old vintage receivers and can relate to your comfortable analogy. Put on the slippers, throw a log on the fire, warm up a sniffer of Brandy, and you may be in sonic bliss. Sounds more like your grandpa eh ? Paired with vintage Polk, and you may stop and wonder why you spend what you do today on gear.HT SYSTEM-
