Definitive Technology Speaker find
Recently scored a sweet deal on 6 Definitive Technology speakers from the local Salvation Army. $80 plus tax.
2 DR-7 Monitor Towers
2 DR7 Bookshelf
1 C1 Center channel
1 Powerfield 15 Sub.
All surrounds, woofers and tweets in great shape and they work just fine. Although I wasn't too excited about the sound of the DR-7 Monitors or Bookshelfs, a bit harsh in 2 Channel music imo, but they do sound nice in HT use.
Started using the Center and Sub, plan to sell the DR-7 Towers and bookshelfs if they don't grow on me soon.
Can't find manuals on any of them or specs and setup info. Particularly interested in Powerfield 15 Sub info. It is not the TL model of more recent lore I don't believe and says 370 Watts on the back with no 'TL' anywhere on it. It says Powerfield 15 Subwoofer on the back, not Powerfield 1500 or 15TL, etc., just Powerfield 15 Subwoofer exactly like this one on Ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/DEFINITIVE-TECHNOLOGY-POWERFIELD-15-SUBWOOFER-370-WATTS-15-USA-EX-SOUND-/130786883019?pt=Speakers_Subwoofers&hash=item1e738175cb
Any of you ever owned this sub in the past or have information on where I can get info on it?
Thanks!

Here is a some good reviews by individuals who have had the towers and bookshelfs. Some even have the specs on them in their reviews. Seems like they were having the same problems as you about finding info about them and contacted DT. Here it is.. http://www.audioreview.com/cat/speakers/floorstanding-speakers/definitive-technology/dr-7/prd_120916_1594crx.aspx

Your salvation army charges tax?2 Channel - Polk SDA-2BTL, Carver TFM-35, Peachtree iDAC, Qobuz streamed via Episode Lynk using bubble UPnP server

Yea saw the reviews on audioreview but thanks Chris I'll just have to contact DT directly.
And yes the Salv Army charges tax lol, at least here in Ohio. -
Real simple information on the DR-7
Early Def Tech, uses the Vifa "Classic" which is now the "Scan Speak Classic" woofer -
Should have a FR around 35-40hz (Def Tech Specs anyways)
And uses a Vifa tweeter -
Woofer - http://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/scanspeak-woofers-6-7/scanspeak-classic-p17wj00-6.5-woofer/
Not 100% on the tweeter but close -

This was around the "BP10" era, basically a direct radiating BP10 - it uses a standard port, it is before Def Tech did their quasi TL design.
The grill is recessed into a baffle for low diffraction.
The enclosure, basic vinyl wrap with a very basic crossover...
Definitely first gen DT
It was also available in three different designs - monitor, tower and with a cap/grill sock look- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
The biggest problem with the sound you are hearing (Modded a few older DTs, like the BP20) - they are around 20 years old now and they used electrolytic caps in the tweeter network that are on their way out... simple crossover refresh makes them sing!
In regards to your Powerfield sub my guess would be as follows - the TL stands for transmission line. In Def Tech's later designs they used a "quasi-TL" design that was like a basic port but used a series of recessed cut outs on the enclosure to augment and load the port. Just a guess of course and this is also when they switched over that model to the cap/sock look...- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Thank you for the info, would you know where and what type of caps/crossover I should purchase for making this upgrade? Should I maybe contact Def Tech direct with this question as well?
Thanks again sir. -
I do not know that much - would be easy to find out, just remove the terminal cup and see what is inside!- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit.

OK thanks I think I'll attempt it on the bookshelves first. lol We'll see how it goes....
-
Contacted (emailed) Def Tech direct last night and they sent me C1 Center and PF 15 manuals this morning. Very cool.
No info on the DR7's though but I responded with a question on replacing the caps/crossovers on them so we'll see what they say. -
I do crossover refresh and mods, would love to help if you can send me some HD pics of the crossovers..
thanks- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Took some pics, let me know what you think or if you need different angles. The caps say Hanlan 6.8 uf 100v BP+-10% on the smaller one and the larger Hanlan and I can see a #12 but the position of it is blocking the view of the other numbers. As you said, both are Vifa Thanks sir.

Just adding some info to the thread so maybe anyone else looking can find it. Contacted Def Tech directly and a cool dude named Chet sent me this stuff on the DR7's. Also sent the manuals on the Center and Sub. Great customer service imo. Also found it interesting that a Def Tech co-founder was Sandy Gross, same guy who helped co-found Polk.

I have the same sub and was looking for some info on what I should set the controls on the back of the sub to. Any ideas? -
Well I have mine set to 50hz low and high crossover setting and the volume at half way most times. Kind of depends on what your fronts can handle and personal taste imo. Also depends on what your amp/receiver can do too. Most have sub crossover settings you can set to send low end signals to your sub at different levels. My HTR's sub crossover is set to 60hz.

What are you powering it all with Shawn?
You do know that Endus will still look down on your system because its not vintage enough right? -
Well hello there sir, these speakers are about 20 yrs old so somewhat vintage, lol. Endus probably uses a tube system, turntable and 70's era speakers? Is he on here too?
My crap is powered with an Integra HTR-7.3 100wpc.
Sold the DR7 Bookshelves on CL yesterday for $100 too so I'm up a few bucks already. -

Endus wishes he had a tube system... Lol.
No he is not on here.
Good to hear from you! Just keep on going down the rabbit hole that is audio and we will be best of buds again. -
lol, he should be on here if he likes vintage stuff.
Nice to hear from you too, small world is the internet. The rabbit hole I am going down, just can't afford to go as deep as I'd like at the moment. -
I just recently purchased a pair of dR7's and am experiencing rattling in one wolfer. It was suggested that I try turning it over to compensate for possible woofer sag as being the culprit. Before knowing this, I had already taken it apart to try to find the problem and was unable to see anything wrong with it. Because it fell out due to my negligence, fortunately into my hand so no damage done, I didn't see which way the wires were going. Were they made with the wires going upward or downward? The other speaker has the wires going up so I'm assuming that is the way they were manufactured. Please advise. Thank you.
