Hello,

Picked up a pair of LSI 15's off of Ebay, they are nice.

I was hoping to add a sub to boost low end, and had my eye on the PSW 125, until I read that the low frequency range on them is actually higher than the LSI 15's at ~34Hz. Is that spec right for a 12 inch powered sub by Polk? Is it worth it to even add it given it doesn't seem to add "The deep bass"?
LSI 15:
Total Frequency Response
22Hz - 27kHz
Upper -3dB Limit
26kHz
Lower -3dB Limit
30Hz

PSW 125
Total Frequency Response
32Hz-225Hz
Lower -3dB Limit
34 Hz

I have that setup and can tell you the PSW125 does help the 15's out on the low end. That said you would be better suited if your budget allows to go with a better sub from Polk (like the PSW505 on newegg, the DSW line as well) or from one of the ID companies (like SVS, HSU, Outlaw Audio).

If it was me I would suggest a budget of 500-600 min for the sub. I think you could get something like a PC-12NSD sub from SVS and it would fill things out much better for you....

    Welcome to Club Polk!

First, that SVS sub above would be better for you.

Second. There are some physics involved here that help explain why even though the 15s have a lower bass floor than the Polk sub, the Polk sub will output MORE, LOUDER bass at the frequencies listed than the LSI unless you have a 1000 watt x 2 amp on those LSis.

The Lsis have an 8" woofer, the PSW sub a 12". So that's a LOT more surface area that can move a lot more air in an enclosure designed only for bass! So it's not just a question of what your cut-off frequency is but also, the size of the driver and the power driving it?

If you look at Polk's sub site, you will notice that they provide a SECOND figure in addition to the low end cut off. That figure is a measurement of how LOUD the sub will play at a particular low frequency range.

If, for example, an LSI with 200 watts to it will play a 34hz signal at X loudness, and a PSW 125 plays that same frequency at X + Y then X + Y is greater than X. So even if LSis can play a 30 hz signal, just how loud would it be? Probably LESS than X! Maybe even much less. In which case the PSW 125 would "seem" to play more or rather LOUDER bass.

Just get the SVS and you'll be fine!

See what subs are available on your local Craigslist find some that are in your price list and sense they are used the cost will be much lower. With the lower cost you can get more for less.
