Nevermind, looks like HDMI board took a dump! After sitting on hold for 40 minutes with Onkyo (not bad for a Sunday) the tech walked me through a factory set up at which point the DVD player wont even allow sound. Man this has me so mad!"if it's not fun, it's not worth it & remember folks, "It's All About The Music"!!

Im in the same boat my 705 is almost ready for the garbage. It loses some settings when the power flickers, causing bad audio delays, it gets piping hot when using 7.1 surround modes. It sometimes switches to stereo when it receives a dolby digital signals and makes loud pops and clicks until I shut it off.Oh, Listen here mister. We got no way of understandin' this world. But we got as much sense of this bird flyin in the sky. Now there is a lot that bird don't know, but it don't change the fact that the world is happening to him all the same. I have an Onk 806 that just lost the HDMI output....my previous 805 did the same they replaced it with the 806 and now it has done the same. At least it lasted 5yrs. I just bought a Marantz 6007 and so far its been great. I'm going to give the 806 to my son, he can use it with the component output.Panasonic 50"

Did you accidentally change the source setting for that function. Bad HDMI boards, and running very hot are a know issue in Onkyo receivers. The heat issue was fixed in the '09 series, and the HDMI seems to have been fixed in late 709, 809, 1009 receivers, this according to the tech support person I talked to at Crutchfield, but anything earlier it is a problem. The best place for info on Onkyo home theater receivers is here: http://www.avsforum.com/newsearch/?search=onkyo&type=allRadio Station W7ITC

I had a 705 that was doing the same thing: It would run super (molten flesh) hot when pushing a heavy load and/or running for long periods of time. When it got like that, it would pretty much take commands more as suggestions and act accordingly, as it pleased. I added a small and super-quiet cooling fan - plugs right into the AC (switched) socket on the back of the rec - above the top chassis vents and the problem was solved. From there, it ran barely warm to the touch and without any issues. Might be worth a try for you. -
I hope it continues to work for you....just to be forwarned mine started working again also after I changed cables I thought maybe I tweaked the cable but it eventually gave out completely. Not trying to be negative but if it just decided to start working again without really doing anything to fix it it may happen again. Hopefully for you it continues to work, I just had a few issues with mine.Panasonic 50"

T-Johnny? Do you have a fan running over the HDMI boards?
Poster above. You're right the higher models have two MONSTER fans on either side of the massive transformer and directly behind the unit long heat sink which is nowhere near the HDMI board, which is really the "only" thing that "actually" gets hot in an Onkyo? And as I understand it, the two fans in the front will not turn on under about 165 degrees? So unless you're "slow cooking something" and that heat is not rising directly out of the HDMI section upward. Those fans will probably NEVER turn on. Maybe we should put a tube coming from the HDMI to the fans and from the fans to the HDMI board inside the Onkyo. lol
That said. My 805 is almost 5 years old and still rolling. But, I don't use those HDMIs more than once a week. I have my HDTV cable routed via component RGB to directly to the TV and the Toslink out on the box going to the Onkyo, so no HDMI needed for TV and frankly, since I have an OLD Toshiba Rear Projection RGB HDTV (which has decent sound because it has a lot of space for speakers and an internal amp), I don't often run the TV in surround or Dolby with the Onkyo?
So the HDMI board (which is the Onkyo nemesis, is just not "getting" much of a work out except from my daughter using the PS3 now and then--we try to keep her time on it down)! And one Blu-ray (HDMI) movie a week or "less"!
So to sum up. FANS, minimal HDMI usage, little use for HDTV, and keep your gaming down. That Onkyo will last for a while. And as for Pioneers. Though I like Elites, they have not been without their own glitches in recent models!
The 805 was sort of the best pound for pound for dollar for dollar boxer of its generation, and I will run it until it "dies"!

What you want is a laptop cooler get one that the feet straddle, or the rig set directly on. Go here there is an excellent selection of them. The most expensive is $49.95, most of the rest are $24 dollars or less. The photo below is the $50 dollars one note that you can move the fans around to suit. Some are USB power other have a plug in power supple. You can also get cooling fans of various diameter for $20 dollars or less in the same area at Tigerdirect.

That's hard to believe. Mine heats up like a toaster after I run a blu-ray for an hour or so! Hmmmm! And somebody like CNET clocked the heat over that part of an 805 at about 136+ degrees F when it was running in surround and HDMI?
Oh well. You have the fan, so that should help things last longer!

Mine doesn't really get hot unitil I turn on the rear surrounds, after about 5 minutes it will burn the hair off of the back of my hand.(honestly) So I dont use the rears anymore afraid of it catching fire. Those fans will kick on too with 7ch. so much I can hear them loudly 9 ft away. Im sure mine will be a converted to a boat anchor soon.Oh, Listen here mister. This is the cooling fan I got: http://www.buyextras.com/cocofanki14q.html#product_reviews
It's about $23 shipped and for my needs it works like a charm - took the chassis from too-hot-to-keep-your-hand-on to barely-warm-to-the-touch. It has rubber supports so it won't move around or scratch your receiver, is super quiet and comes with the AC plug-in adapter. I plugged it into the "switched" AC outlet on the back of the receiver so it came on whenever the receiver was on. You just need to run your receiver without this fan for a while to see where it gets the hottest and place the fan right in that spot and let it do its thing. I was actually very surprised at how well it worked, even in a closed-front component cabinet. -

Thanks, that's a way better fan then the one I have right now. Love it! Not sure if I have 2 outlets on the back of my amp, but I can always plug it in. Again, thank you."if it's not fun, it's not worth it & remember folks, "It's All About The Music"!!
