How much would i need to stretch the budget to get a killer improvement? Spending close to $300 for a slight one isnt worth it imho but i really cant swing $700 at the moment
To my way of thinking, ANY film capacitor is TONS better than the crappy wide-tolerance electrolytic caps that Polk installed originally. Then consider that all those cheap electrolytic caps are years beyond their expected service life.
You could install inexpensive Dayton, ERSE, or whatever-brand film caps and realize considerable improvement over the degraded electrolytics in there now. I did, and I'm THRILLED with the way my 1Bs sound as a result.
You could install FRESH, cheap electrolytic caps and still get an improvement over the cheap and OLD electrolytic caps that have, by now, drifted off their "nominal" value. (I'm not presenting this as a realistic option. I'm saying that the quality of the new caps is only HALF of the equation--the other half is how BAD your existing parts are.) -
actually those are all very good points...thank you for your insight on it

Yea it's been brought out to spend the "money" on the caps that are for the tweeters and to use cheaper caps on the midrange pass through. Like at lot of you I did not realize the price of the caps would really add up but decided to do it and be done with it as I already bought the nice boards. And I plan on keeping the speakers as nothing else seems to impress me or give me the kind of enjoyment of music that they do.POLK SDA 2.3 TLS BOUGHT NEW IN 1990, Gimpod/Sonic Caps/Mills RDO-198

i guess im just of the persuasion that while i really got a great deal on some very high end speakers, im not looking to spend big dollars for it. If i was i would have looked for something new and costs much more.

I figure $100 for the tweeters and $200 for the crossovers = $300 and enjoy them for 6 months then see if you want to do more.POLK SDA 2.3 TLS BOUGHT NEW IN 1990, Gimpod/Sonic Caps/Mills RDO-198

Sounds like those 1Bs are rockin' that bedroom of yours, Johnny!
If they're sounding so darn good (the Onkyo 805 must be up and running again!) why put anything into them right now? You're about due for a change anyway, aren't you? Maybe the 2.3s or 1.2s? -

More than that... but close enough. Crossovers would be basic. A good one will cost double that quote. -
yes very basic is right, that would be cheaper caps on the pass thru, yes I paid $200 each for mine with the Gimpod boards.More than that... but close enough. Crossovers would be basic. A good one will cost double that quote.POLK SDA 2.3 TLS BOUGHT NEW IN 1990, Gimpod/Sonic Caps/Mills RDO-198

Looked at the schematic for the 3.1TL.
Four 12uF caps
Two 24uF caps
Two 55uF caps
Two 1.3 ohm resistors
The All-ERSE solution would be something like $75 in parts with shipping. $200 seems...way high. Even if you paid to have these components installed.
Might as well add a better SDA inductor: ERSE has a pair of 16-gauge, 18mH inductors rated for "500 watts" for $56 + some additional shipping. Don't bother if your amp is current-limited. NOW we're getting somewhere close to $200 (if you're paying for labor.)
Are there better parts available? Sure. I'd strongly prefer Mills resistors over ERSE or Dayton resistors, but not only are the Mills resistors slightly more expensive, but you'll double the shipping charges. You could, perhaps, buy "boutique"-brand 12uF caps and better resistors for the HF part of the crossovers from another source, keep the ERSE larger-value caps and inductors for the LF part of the crossovers, and not go far over $200. Are the parts I've suggested better than what's on the circuit board now? Absolutely--these parts are far better than what went into the circuit boards when they were new. -
well G come up with an extensive parts list for me which includes better SDA connections, posts and a lot of dampening material to go with the xover and tweeters, so ill probably stick with that
but everyone brought up good options and points
