ok guys im gonna vent a little so bear with me.i waslistening to some johnny lang and both tweeters blew.i phoned the polk 1 800 number and told them my problem and he said no problem they have a 5 yr warrenty and they would fix me up i told him i was in canada so he said call their canadian distributor and he would help me out i said great thank you.so i called him told him my problem and he said i was listening to loud and my crappy amp probally clipped and sent a square wave and blew them.because there was no way a tweeter will ever blow.how does he know what amp i have?wouldnt let me tell him what amp i have. but he did say he would send me new ones so i gave him my adress so i will see if they show up.i have a emo xpa-5 amp i know its not the best but it is good for me.my little jbl stage speakers which are 10 yrs old are still going strong and i have had them a lot louder.i use to have a pioneer vsx 906s and that didnt blow them and the emo didnt but my poor 70s did.i have my jbls hooked to the emo now and they are fine.so i have to ask is there a better tweeter i can buy if the replacement ones go again when i get them.i know both sets are not big money ones but the jbls keep going.i have a wife and 3 kids so i cant get big money ones so have to live with what i have .thanks for letting me vent a little.

I guess these things can happen, but in general, the advice Polk gave is not false. Most blown M-series tweeters are in fact due to clipping. Of course it is possible to overload them, but you say you've played other speakers louder.

Sorry to hear about your problem, but Polk is honoring their end. I've had a set of M-70s for several years now, have run them off an Adcom GFA-555 and later, an Onkyo TX-SR 805. I've never clipped either piece and have never blown an M-70 tweeter either? Of course I don't really play anything much above 85-90 db so one does have to wonder what standard "loud" represents"?

Although they are NOT really compatible, the Rti series soft domes are more robust than what is in the M-series but the crossovers in that series are different so an Rti tweeter would not be a drop in replacement. But I've read very very few reports of these tweets blowing!

Your amp may very well have thrown a clipped signal at your tweeters, but frankly I'm a bit shocked that a customer service rep would insult your equipment. That's almost the same as telling you never to buy Polk products ever again. Maybe that's what he wanted?

You mentioned that your JBL speakers are "little." That would usually mean that they need less power to get loud. So, could it be that with the JBLs you just aren't turning the volume knob as high as you normally would with the Monitor 70s? Are you sure you have the gains set properly? And I'm not sure if it matters, but are you using a biwiring configuration with the monitor 70s?

Sorry to hear about that. I had my M70's overpowered with 300wpc for awhile and not only did they not blow, it was the best they ever sounded loud.

No I don't have them bi wired and all the gains are set low even my input signal is set at plus 2 DBS. I have had my jbls at 46 and when the tweeters went in my 70s I was only listening at 26 on my umc not sure what the decibals would be. Thanks for all the replies I do love them and they were sounding so good with the more power compared to my pioneer avr I had on them first. And now that I've had a couple of days to think about it maybe the Canadian rep was just having a bad day. So I'm not giving up on Polk yet

My M70 tweeters have blown too. So have my CS2 (twice) and one of my M40s.
    They are just cheap tweeters.

Just out of curiosity...does anyone know of any aftermarket tweeters that would make good drop-ins for the M70s? Something from Madisound maybe? I got a solid 4 years from my M50s before switching to the 70s, so I don't expect any problems. But, if it does come to that, I was thinking it wouldn't be a bad idea to grab some vifas or scanspeaks off the web.

    I looked into this.
After the five year protection is up from polk im not going to buy their tweeters from them for $35 each. The replacement tweeter they sent me for my M40 fell out of the grey bezel. Its just glued in. So after the five years im just going to push them out and dump a different 1" tweeter in.

(I never had to call Polk to get a RMA. You just mail the driver in with the serial number of the speaker with it. Few weeks later you have a new driver, no questions asked.)

Thanks for the link. Those Vifa ring radiator tweeters for $35 each look intriguing. I can't help but wonder how difficult / easy it would be to make them work with my current speakers.
