What is better...

What would perform better, a 12 inch driver in a sealed box with a 100 watt RMS/150 watt peak or a 10 inch driver in a ported box with the same amp? Frequency response is similar.

Too many un-answered variables to decide.

    Is that a $25 Rat shack 12, and a $300 Focal 10, or vice-versa?

What I am trying to find out is, will a smaller driver with a bigger amp out perform a bigger driver with a smaller amp?

There's no way to give a generic yes or no on that scenario.

What class / design of amp?

What are the xmax, f3 and Q factors on the drivers?

What are the drivers efficiency ratings?

What is the design of both boxes, bracing, wadding, etc?

Do you see where I'm going here? If you have 2 particular models in mind, lay it out - then perhaps someone can speak from personal experience on each.

    Cheers,
    Russ

heres a thought buld a sub for the same price as thoes you can have a killer sub. if you can cut a circle you can buld a sub. you can get the mdb cut to size at hd or lowes all you have to do is cut the circle for the sub and the square for the plate amp. also you can buy a pre made box form ltryke they have deals on them at times.

Gerald, I know you arent keen on a DIY sub but Gonzo is right. I built a DIY Tempest for less than $550 Canadian completed. Check out www.creativesound.ca for the amp and driver. It will be in the same league as a SVS PC+ or Servo 15, maybe better. Ask Doc or Ron-P. It is simple, all you need are a weekend, a drill and a jigsaw ($30).

I'm not going to buy either of the subs I mentioned. I'm just trying to figure out what is better.

it all depends if the sub is not efeshent you need much more power to get the same out from a similar sub with a higher efency. now quailty of sub. most store bought in cc,bb abc cant hit the last octive. unles you want to spend 1-3k at a high end shop. but for the same performance if you buld a sub you will olny spend less than 500. i will put my sub in the leag of the wilison x1 in sheer output but it is proabley not as musical and might have a smigh higher thd. but 18k un powered vs 1k powered. i rest my case.
