i am in the process of taking apart my hafler preamp to clean the pots with deoxit. the volume and balance controls are retained with a threaded (i.d.) set-screw. what do i need/use to remove these so i can get the knobs off? thanks for any help.

Hello,
If I remember correctly those are hex-head set screws, but you might be able to spray the pots with just the top removed.

thanks for the response, kenneth. nope; these puppy's are threaded from the top down. hex head won't work. i have a feeling this may have been done specifically so you would need a tool from the mfg. or a tech. can't find anything thru an online search, either."The symbol is not the reality"

Hello,
I found the owner's manual for building the kit:
http://www.hafler.com/techsupport/pdf/DH-101_preamp_man.pdf
On page 19 instruction 121 says to use the supplied Allen wrench to tighten the set screws on all the knobs and balance control. Dave Hafler always used off-the-shelf parts and wouldn't have made anything require specific, hard to find tools. It's been a while since I built one of these, but unless someone has replaced the original knobs with something else an Allen wrench went into the holes on the bottom of each knob.
Regards, Ken -
hey, kenneth; i did happen to find a REALLY small one and it worked. so does my balance control now after deoxit. thanks."The symbol is not the reality"

Very cool, it's always good to have balance in life.
