Crime of the century

We have some petty crime here in the Keys, but it is usually just funny antics. This one just cracked me up and illustrates the level of crime here as it made the front page. My brother in law is thinking of becoming a cop and moving here to Key West and it's because the crime isn't too dangerous.
So for a quick Monday laugh:

Man, 69, arrested for bomb threat
Battery with wires was passed to postal clerk
BY SANDRA FREDERICK Citizen Staff
A 69-year-old man was arrested Friday morning after he handed clerks at the Marathon post office a threatening note, a police report said.
Juan Zigler, no home address given, walked into the post office about 11:30 a.m. and passed the postal clerk a garbled note which threatened to "blow up the hole florida keys." He then threw an object over the counter which initially looked to the clerks like a firecracker of some sort.
The police report said the object appeared to be "some sort of battery with a wire attached to it." [Juan Zigler]
"The bomb squad was not called," Becky Herrin, spokeswoman for the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, said Saturday.
"When the deputy looked more closely at the device, it was obviously not an explosive, but it scared the clerk when he threw it."
When Deputy John Keeney arrived, Zigler was still in the building and he was taken into custody.
Zigler was charged with two felonies -- making a false report of a bomb and with manufacturing or delivering a hoax bomb.
A longtime family friend said Saturday afternoon she was not aware of Zigler's arrest.
She said she thought he was in a hospital in the Fort Lauderdale area and had been missing for a few weeks.
"He was a nice man," Anola Mira said from her Key West home. "I have known him for more than 52 years; he used to ask me to dance when we were kids. He always wore a suit."
Mira said that Zigler had struggled with homelessness for most of his life and would often stop by the family's home in Old Town to say hello.
"He was never aggressive when he was here," she added.
Zigler was booked into the Middle Keys jail and was released a few hours later after first appearance in front of a judge, Herrin said.

sounds like our police reports here lately. Just had one in which the person called the police and stated that he didn't know who was digging holes in his front yard in which it was for the road construction for the (already being worked on) expansion going through. They had been working on this for the last 2 months and he called last week.

That's what I love about the Key's, even the criminals are ole funky dudes with character.
Here in Tucson it would've been a gangbanger with a gun, and someone would've been shot.My equipment sig felt inadequate and deleted itself. -
Probably just wanted a warm place to sleep if you ask me- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit.

I've often thought that if I had to be homeless, I'd rather be sleeping on a Florida Key as opposed to sleeping on a steaming sewer grate in Chicago/NY/etc. "Goin' where the weather suits my clothes"
