I thought about getting one a few months back for the Trinnov room correction, but ended up getting a Marantz sr7005. It seems like the update firmware has fixed most of the issues on the Sherwood, but a few issues seem to remain including a few second sound lag when switching sources (or just channels). I wish I had given the Sherwood a chance, but my previous processor was a little buggy. I just wanted a nice AVR that worked without any major bugs. I have not been too impressed with Audyssey so far at least compared to ARC(I do like Audyssey better than MCACC and a few others I have tried). I would have liked to try Trinnov to compare it to ARC.

Mark Fleischmann, a reviewer for Home Theater Magazine had this to say about the Sherwood Newcastle R-972 while watching a movie he was reviewing "The gorgeous, undulating, metallic textures were unlike anything I’ve ever heard in a surround system.". As I unravel this receiver I am finding I agree with him. At 599.00 this machine had got to be one of those deals of the century. You can find his complete review here:

I've been eyeing it for my living room system, not going to pull the trigger right now but I did a lot of reading on it and think it's an interesting avr and would like to hear it.

I have been looking harder too. I got my Pio at a good price and will be losing a little power with the change, but my speaks are not large and are pretty efficient. Sometimes you gotta shake things up!

I have found that Mr. Fleischmann's review is pretty much accurate except where he says that he wished it had HD radio. It does have XM. Isn't that HD radio?

Nope. XM Radio has one HD station currently. "Sirius XM Pops" classical is the only XM station broadcast in HD. The rest are standard def 2 channel stations.

Most commonly, the HD radio format is in FM stations and Mr. Fleischmann is correct in that the Sherwood does not have an HD FM tuner.

These were available recently for $299 refurbed. I was really tempted... has anyone here used one?

It appears they are getting rid of these various places, so I'd expect to see other cheap options in the near future.
