PSW350 Hookup LFE vs Speaker Hook-up

I know that LFE vs Wired hook-up has been discussed before, but maybe I'm a bit dull on the whole thing.
I just threw out my old receiver and got a new Onkyo tx nr616. My old HK had a sub-out/LFE, but it sounded like butt and may have been faulty, so I went with the speaker wire hook up (running the receiver to the sub and then from the sub to the fronts). This hook up sounded great with my HK and honestly sounds great with my Onkyo as well.
I'm in a small room, so there isn't that much wire running around, but the placement is... complicated. ie- there is a ton of furniture to be moved including a couple of bookcases.
I like that even on 2ch listening, the sub blends with my fronts the way I have it hooked up now and I don't want to lose that, but I also think I could be missing out on bass from movies in my 5.1 HT from DVDs and whatnot with my current hook up.
I guess I'm looking for a clear explanation on the pro/con of LFE vs wired sub set ups. Maybe some facts on if I really am missing out on something without the LFE and if current receivers technology (as opposed to the 20 year old HK I did have) won't shut down my 2ch sub benefits.
Oh, and opinions... You guys have 'em and I respect 'em, so bring them on!

I'm not an audiophile or ht guru, but in movies and tv shows recorded in 5.1 dolby and above, I do hear a difference. WHen wired with the LFE, the low Hz special effects sound a little more pronounced. I don't thinkit makes much of a difference in older formats.
When listening to music, be it in 2 or 5 channel, my yammie recognizes the sub, so I guess it directs freqs below 80 Hz to that instead of the fronts anyway. Anyway, didn't notice any difference there either.
