I was off this week and became addicted to a series on the History Channel titled "Men Who Made America". It chronicled the lives of key people who started the industrial age in America such as Andrew Carnegie, John D Rockefeller, JP Morgan, Henry Ford, etc. Really interesting insight into these men and how they made their fortunes. The series also provided insight into the political backdrop which allowed these men to achieve their great wealth and the impact it had on the working class of that era. Really interesting and worth watching.

Happy Thanksgiving. Time to baste the turkey!

Most definitely. My wife and I finished watching it this last week. Having recently moved to the WA DC area and exploring all the historical sites has helped renew our interest in history. I'd loved to have watched this series when I was in school.

I started a thread in music and movies about this series.

Agreed it would be great for school kids as it does not go into minute detail about their lives, but more about the industrys and men, and how their competition and cooperation made so much advancement possible

Not in this state anyway. Illinois is starting to look like a baby California without the palm trees.

Anyway, didn't get to watch that series but thanks for the reminder. Many great men.....and women, who took an idea, a vision, and ran with it. The reason you won't hear their names too often in history books is because they emphasize what capitalism is all about. Well, up to the point it got corrupted to all hell anyway but thats another topic. Saw an interesting stat the other day I wasn't aware of. Something like over half of the Dows top 50 companies were started during the depression era. I guess when you have nothing, taking a risk and loosing it all doesn't sound so bad. Could be we are at those crossroads again ?

It was a very well done series. I DVRed all the two hour episodes and have watched them all.

Most amazing thing I didn't know was the early patent on the automobile that was used to try and shut down Ford.

If it had not been overturned in court our roads would look a lot different.

As someone who taught American history for twelve years (I'd kill to get back to having that class), it was extremely well done. Much of what the program presented I taught to my 8th graders. The Guilded Age/Robber Barons are a part of school curriculum, but with so many demands on what to cover and the limited time, sadly at most only a week is given to covering industrialization.
