bigec,
no direct input other than i noted the same in a 2200 - 2900 - 5900 comparison. more features, more money for not much spec gain. a demo shoot out will be needed imo...
will add the denon has shot themselves in the foot before by making too good a mid-line model cdp back in the 80's. the dcd-1500 out performed their totl dcd-1800 at about 60% of the price. while the 1500 scored "digital audio's" first ever perfect 10, the 1800 only managed an 8.
maybe they've done it again???More later,
Tour...

2200 and 2900 has same video engine that results in same PQ. 2900 has better Audio DAC, build quality, RS232 Port and more flexible BM for Multichanel music. 2200 will give you prety good PQ and decent SQ at about 40% less money then 2900. As mentioned above, build quality (more heavy duty construction) and audio are better on the 2900 than the 2200. Although the 2900 and 2200 both use Burr Brown audio DACS, the 2900 uses the better 1790 version rather than the 1791 version in the 2200. S/N ratio is 118dB vs. 115dB.

1790 vs. 1791
In making my decision to get a 2900, I was replacing a mediocre SACD player and didn't want to take only a minor step up in audio quality with the 2200. For DVD-Audio, the 2200 would not hold its own with the Toshiba SD-9200. The 2900 is equal to or better than anything on the market under $1K as an SACD player or DVD-Audio player. The 2900 is a better CD player than the 2200 and competes well with stand-alone CD players.
Video quality should be identical on the 2900 and 2200. -
Hey Emlyn,
I too have the Tosh 9200 and I think I am about to get credit towards another player. I love the S and PQ, but have had to take it in three times for transport problems. Skipping, pausing etc.
I am wondering how you think the 2900 would compare to the Tosh 9200 on cd playback. I will be using the analog outs as I did on the tosh, and sound quality is very important to me. Do you think it will be at least as good as the toshiba?
I'm pretty certain the picture quality will be better and the sacd and dvd-a with the added bass management abilities sound good as well. I know you have both units so I thought you migh be a good person to ask.
Thanks,

Hi Steve,
I use my Toshiba SD-9200 for CDs using the analog outputs rather than the coaxial or optical digital outputs. There are distinct differences to me in sound character (not necessarily sound quality) between the Toshiba and Denon 2900. The Toshiba is smoother while the Denon is more detailed. A couple of years ago a reviewer for a magazine, I think it was Stereophile Guide to Home Theater, compared the CD playback from the Toshiba favorably with dedicated CD players costing up to $2000. Occasionally mine has the rumbling transport problem which seems to vary from disc to disc and day to day. It hasn't bothered me enough to get the case cracked open though. For my ears, I'd rate the sound quality on the Denon 2900 as very good, the Toshiba excellent. But then on the other hand, the Toshiba doesn't play SACDs and the sound quality from the Denon 2900 is excellent using SACDs. In terms of picture quality, the Denon is far better than the Toshiba. The Denon is the best DVD player I've owned yet in terms of picture quality. Bass management and distance compensation is a definite benefit with the Denon over the Toshiba, especially for those who need to set some speakers to small. If you can, I'd suggest keeping the Toshiba and trying it out just to play CDs. However, I think the players are still selling for $450 or thereabouts on Audiogon.
