Preparing For Setup

Gentlemen and the more occasional ladies,

I am expecting the arrival of my new receiver and need some pre-advice for my preparation.

I grabbed an Onkyo NR TX616 recently at a deep discount (only after I read that almost every problem that the box suffered from was fixed with the latest firmware update).

This will be my first experience with Audyssey and while I normally trust my own ears (and ultimately will let them be my guide), I thought I'd give it a go.

So, I'm sure that Audyssey will judge what size my speakers are, I was wondering, if given the choice to manually input that info, what would you guys determine the RTA 11TL's to be? "Small" or "Large"? I know the rest of my speakers are "Small", but when a speaker is taller than my waist, it looks "Large" to me. And the sound isn't small either.

This receiver is supposed to come in tomorrow or the next day, so I'll add some other questions if (when) I become befuddled.

? Harmon Kardon AVR 55 (dead; replacing with Onkyo TX NR-616)
? Polk RTA 11TL's (FR and FL)
? Polk TSi200's (RR and RL)
? Polk CS10 (Center)
? Polk PSW-350
? Grado SR-60i Headphones
? Fii0 E5 headphone amp
? iPod touch (8 gig)
? iPod Classic (80 gig)
? Mac Mini (as media server)
? xbox 360

I'd go small and set your crossover around 80hz, they won't play notes below that as good as a dedicated subwoofer, and it will also help ease the load on your Onkyo

I'll second B's suggestion, although when I'm using my Monitor 10s as my front stage I usually cross them over at 40hz. Anything higher and the fronts sound a little thin. When I use my LDS810s I usually go with a 60 or 80hz crossover. Hope that helps.

    Thanks to you both.

This is on a different note, but I know most people run their subs from the receiver itself, but on my HK this sounded artificial in movies. It also caused my music when in stereo to have more buzz or tone than the punch I know it was supposed to have. So I was planning on continuing running the sub 'passively' with my new setup. Partially because I'm lazy, but also it seemed that any bass that the RTA11TL's couldn't handle seemed to be shifted smoothly to the sub and I like how 'real' it sounds/feels.

Is this something that Audyssey will be able to recognize, or will it be expecting a direct line out for the sub?

I've always run it with a sub cable and never have had an issue with the sound, so i'm not sure. I'd run it the conventional way with a sub cable first and give it a shot.
