Need some speedy advice: Marantz SR5004 or Onkyo TX-NR708?

Just like the title says. I've heard some really good things about the Marantz SR5004's sound but the draw back is that it doesn't have HDMI pass-through. OTTH, the Onkyo has the pass-through but is a known "buggy" avr. I'm looking to pull the trigger tonight and price is not an issue. My main reason for upgrading from my Denon is better sound and the ability to add external amplification. Any input is greatly appreciated!

I know the X08 series Onkyo avr's have had some issues. My 3008 broke after about a month and would no longer respond to the remote, apparently this was an issue with all 08 series that can be fixed, but it has to happen while its under warranty and be shipped back to Onkyo. For that reason alone i'd go Marantz, I briefly had a 6005 and it worked just fine as a processor driving my old Adcom amp.

Thanks for the quick response, B. This is probably the direction I will go. As for the HDMI pass-through issue, I can just connect my cable box HDMI directly to my TV and run the Audio Out from the TV optical output to the Marantz optical input for when I want cable with surround. This is a must for watching The Walking Dead.

Why not run everything via HDMI to the AVR then just run one HDMI to the tv? I'd never watch tv without listening to it through my speakers so i've never used the pass through feature, or really given it much thought honestly.

I kinda feel it's a waste of power to have all that equipment on just to watch the news at 6 a.m. before work or for my daughter to watch Sponge Bob after school. Perhaps I need to be more open-minded to the option.

    Hello:

I have the TX-NR709 and the only thing I have noticed is that sometimes I will loose audio using the HDMI pass-through, nothing a quick power reset will fix. I only use the feature for my kids to watch their shows.

    Cheers

Just pulled the plug on the SR5004. Will report back once I give it a good listen.
