Help setting up 5.1 surround system
Hi everyone - I'm finally piecing together a surround system and looking for setup advice. I have a Sony STR-DG520 receiver, Polk Audio CSi30 center channel speaker, and (2) Kenwood LS model 3-way floor standing speakers with 10" woofer from the late seventies or early eighties as my front left and right speakers. I also have a set of Polk RTi38 book shelf speakers still in the box, and just ordered a Polk PSW505 12" sub.
Here's my thinking; I would like to replace the Kenwoods in the front with the RTi38 speakers, thinking the sub will compliment them rather nicely. I then would like to add (2) Polk satellites for the rear speakers. Does that sound reasonable? I?m just an old school guy who still thinks bigger is better and having a hard time parting with my Kenwoods! LOL
Also, can you recommend a reasonably priced speaker stand for the bookshelf speakers? And how high should they be? They?ll sit next to my audio cabinet that is about 24" high. Above that is the 50? Panasonic plasma.
Can you also recommend a middle of the road Polk satellite for the rear? And what type or gauge wiring should I use?
THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

Sanus stands are reasonably priced I think you can find them around $40 a pair at least thats what I paid for my 31" stands. Try to get the tweeter about ear height (when sitting). Dolby and THX recommends the surrounds to be 1 to 2 feet above the ear but thats difficult unless your wall mounting. Your mains as close to 5/8's the height of your TV and the center speaker above or below the TV as close as you can get it. Above being best but below works fine to. So you will just have to measure and see what works in your situation. The monitor30 is a small bookshef popular for surround speakers check Newegg.com they have great sales on polk audio all the time.Oh, Listen here mister. We got no way of understandin' this world. But we got as much sense of this bird flyin in the sky. Now there is a lot that bird don't know, but it don't change the fact that the world is happening to him all the same. What I am tryin to say is, is that the course of your life, well its changing, and you don't even see it- Forest Bondurant

Thanks for the advice! Monitor30 speakers look good. I'll let you all know how things go together. Should have time around the Thanksgiving holiday to hook up.
