The error....

"The product key used to activate Windows on your PC is a volume license key that has been blocked by Microsoft."

Ok here's what happen here, I'm trying to learn my class CCNA so I got a virtual software on my Laptop Ubuntu OS. So I had this Win XP Service 2 CD so I put it in this virtual software and it worked able to install my CCNA software then I....

Tried to install Microsoft Security Essentials but I can't and then I remember can't update XP service 2 it needs to be Service 3. Now I remember someone else told me to get service 3 update from Microsoft direct which I did and now have service 3. So when I tried to get Microsoft Security Essentials again it installed a Genuine Windows software, and now have this problem. So I'm I screwed now will Windows die?

WHile I agree then Windows 7 is generally a very nice OS, Windows XP is still better suited for a VM IMO. It's got a much smaller footprint and requires less memory to run, both features that are favorable towards a VM. I have a VM on the iMac and chose Windows XP for that very reason, and it does everything I need done inside the VM.

For a primary computer I'd argue that Windows 7 is easily the way to go, but for a VM I like XP.

Was the original disk a valid license? Are you trying to load it onto more than one machine?

If you own the license and are trying to install on a new machine you can try calling Microschmuck. A long time geek friend had issues with XP on a regular basis. So many people were using key generators that valid licenses in the shrink wrap had invalid keys.

Not sure but think its a new CD XP service 2, I was in a class which allowed me to download many OS I download this CD. I found later Windows will not update Service 2 or Service 1 CD OS which I download the Service 2 CD to play with it. It registered ok, and didn't give me any errors. Then I tried to install the Microsoft Security Essentials but needed a Service 3 OS and I download this update.... Then it download the Genuine Windows software. Now you know the whole story.

If service pack three loaded without issue you should be alright. I would check just to make sure you loaded the correct security essentials.

If service pack three did not load correctly I have the full service pack on disk I could drop in the mail for you.

You downloaded a CD with a volume license key. Probably legit at the time (for the school), but now blacklisted just like the message said. You need another key.

You can buy some cheap cisco gear off ebay. 2 x 2950 and a 2621 for pretty cheap. Hell I got a 2621 you can have if you cover shipping. Its loaded with 12.something....Just pay it forward when your done!. Let me know and its yours

My recommendation is to take your time and read the Official Cert Guide (Wendell Odom) from front to back first. A great reference once your done also. You can also split the test up now into ICND 1 and ICND2. It may help but costs twice as much as there are 2 tests. Cisco likes to try to fool you so make sure to read each question a few times.

That's a really sweet offer, but feel I'm fine at this time. The program which I'm running on the VM is a CCNA virtual lab which act's pretty much like any router, switch, and computer network. The bigger issue is that CCNA virtual lab is only to work on 1 computer at time, I needed to remove it from the other computer first. Then it can be licence only twice so I'm done.
