End Table Refinishing Project I Just Completed

Wasn't sure where else to post this but wanted to share following some positive feedback I received from a vintage speaker project I did earlier.

This end table / record storage piece was picked up at an estate sale last summer. I believe I paid $5 for it and just felt like it had potential to be a nice piece of furniture. It was in horrible shape with one side seemingly chewed by an angry dog. It sat on the carport for over a year before I attempted a refreshening. Here are the before pics...

Next came the deconstruction when it became apparent that a simple sand and stain was not going to be enough. I did more damage to the wood than intended when removing the top and bottom but learned from that for future projects. Rubber mallet will be used in the future. Next came the sanding to get ready for new stain. I wanted to end up with a dark red mahagony look that would compliment my entertainment center and other furniture.

I decided to round off the front corners of the top and bottom in order to deal with the chewed damage. A scroll saw or jig saw would have been a much better choice, but I used what I had a available. A dremel and a palm sander. Not perfect or uniform by any means, but it ended up adding "character" lol..

I spent many hours on the finish. All panels received 2 coats of minwax red mahagony stain. Then each side was brushed with semi gloss polyurethane. Time consuming I tell you. Doing it outside on the carport- usually at night led to the inevitable bugs marring the finish. I sanded with 320 or 400 grit between coats until I had a decent base to work from. Finally I used a hand wiping stain 1/2 poly and 1/2 mineral spirits to help get a smooth and lusterous finish. The little dust nibs were knocked down with a brown paper bag and I finally relented to the laws of diminishing returns.

If I had to do it again the top would be handled differently. From the early pics you can see that it was attached with multiple nails and not in a uniform manner from left to right sides. I should have filled the top surface in with wood filler then sanded smooth. During reassembly I would have liked to only use 3 or 4 screws on each of the side panels and countersink the holes so I could have plugged them. Not sure how to do that not stain and poly once reassembled though.

The little side strips just never looked close enough to the other panels to satisfy me. So I decided to leave them off the finished piece. Little pieces are harded to work with than the bigger panels.

All in all I am very satisfied with the end result and enjoy seeing it on my end of the couch now. Thanks for looking. Travis

Really nice, love the reddish finish and the metal accents.

Nice work travis, and a nice eye for something worthy of saving.

Nice job! Did you consider some brown/red paint to cover the screws? I think it may make them less obvious. Enjoy!

No due to the brass pull on the front, I decided to use brass screws to compliment. I still need to take the drawer pull off and polish with some brasso and a dremel and see how it looks. The screws don't bother me being visible, it's the fact that the previous nail holes in different horizontal locations if looking at left side panel and right side panel do not line up that really hurts my ocd.
