Well lets start with the JVC X30 review first
Having owned many projectors in the past (mostly LCD tech) This is my first LYCOS projector. The LYCOS has three liquid crystal silicon panels inside but the light engine is totally sealed like DLP tech so no need to worry about dust getting into the light path
First impressions was astonishing with the JVC. I put the lights out and hit the switch on the remote and and heard a little noise but even at less than 2 foot I could not even hear the fan as it was near silent in operation. What happened next was a bright JVC logo just beamed out from the center of the image but the projector did not even look like it was on. I new I was in for a treat straight away in the contrast department
When I hooked up a 235 cinema scope movie the black bars above and below the screen were jet black on my white 1.1 gain screen. I have always craved this from a projector and it was my biggest let down from the Epson 5010 as it was an ugly shade of bright grey. The contrast really does POP as I have heard people say for 2D performance. I have never until now experienced what a high native contrast does to colors on screen and the effect is a vivid vibrant picture that makes it look sharper and brighter than the image actually is. This is all in a room with a white ceiling and walls!! I can only imagine what this thing can do in a batcave
When flicking through movies and blurays the picture takes on an almost 3 dimensional appearance with a really natural depth to the image because contrast is so high. No matter what projector I had in the past on no matter what brightness setting the 2D picture never had this much depth. I love movies so the film like quality of a movie was lacking on the Epson 5010 as it had a hard looking artificial cold or rough feel to the image. The JVC X30 is really smooth and there is more information per pixel that gives a more organic quality for DVD's. The best way to describe the JVC is less digital looking on not just bluray but also DVD's
The projector has motorized lens function so there is no little knob or wheels to turn to adjust the picture. You just get the remote and electronically adjust the zoom for sharpness, up and down left or right for the picture placement and up and down to decrease or increase the size of the image awesome!! There is also an automatic picture crop feature I found later so you can just zoom out the black bars to fit the aspect of a 235 screen like I have now
So here I shall load a picture up that just sums up the whole JVC X30 experience for me and its the start of the new Dead Space movie. Sure I have saw star fields and loved the look but new saw full brightness with such a deep dark inky black background. This is the crack for the eye balls as I am now hooked forever.
Once you see crack you'l never go back

As you can see from the image above the black bars are black and there is plenty more snap as pictures just cant portray it properly
-
I will just throw in another couple of pictures here and move on to the Optoma gt750
-
The reason most of the snaps are of dead space is just to show how bright the highlights appear but the blacks look even darker than they are coming from the camera to the computer.
-
View a projector, any projector on its own and it looks fantastic.
Here are a few snaps from a movie I rented the other night titled ' The Watch' or 'Dont Watch!! ' as it should justly be titled. This projector has a really short throw but the lens is in a fixed position and it has built in speakers. I just plugged the HDMI cord straight from the bluray to the projector and I was able to clearly watch the whole movie at half the volume from 3 feet away. This projector can fill a 166" screen with blinding brightness at just 9 foot!!!!!!! amazing to have it do all this for this cheap. Even though the image is only 720p or its like 1200 by 800 so a little higher, its ultra sharp without being hard around the edges
I just shined this on a white wall in the spare room so your looking at 133" from about 7 foot on the low brightness cinema mode. Even at this I still cranked the brightness down -
-
Here is a mixed scene and dlp looks pretty good here for only having a 3000:1 contrast without an iris I should add
-
The optoma is decent on skin tones and has a nice palette but there is no CMS system so theres never any hope of getting perfect color
-
One more pic here and then I will load up a few side by side shots of Dark shadows that I did
-
This is a nice picture to start with as you will see what I talked about in the op with the JVC sartup logo.

-
Both these images in the pictures are around 80" each
-
The setting on the jvc is too cool in the color temperature but have just been fiddling with them settings as they are very consistent to each other in brightness. Contrast remains great though throughout
-
There's no contest here but I think I will be doing a 3D evaluation and try get some pictures on that later using the RF vesa ports of both machines

The pics from the cheap pj look more natural. The logo in the first pic looks bang on minus the horrid black level. The sky in post #12 actually looks like the sky.
Did you calibrate the JVC?
Mind you, maybe my monitor is a little off? -
Yes the DLP has been corrected as good as I can get it so far. The JVC pics were done cycling through various settings so I dont even know if I had it on proper cinema settings and color temp. The JVC should calibrate way better than the Optoma but my pictures were just to show the native contrast. The Optoma is a very good projector for the cash and DLP has a very natural look and feel. The motion handling for fast pans is much better than the JVC. If you just put the Optoma up on its own and pump out a 166" picture from 9 foot then it would look more dazzling than the JVC and the big picture gives you that real deal home cinema feel with 3000 lumens you can deal with less than stellar blacks. The Optoma is the champion for video games too as its got zero lag and just handles anything well
-
The blacks on the Optoma look washed out to me for some reason. I still say the JVC's are bang up projectors for the price. If you got the X30 for a great price I would def keep it. I'm stoked for that 4K eshift 2 feature with the new 4810 coming down the line. Excellent review bro.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

The throw I have the jvc at right now is around 15 foot doing 133" and its plasma bright. That 50000:1 contrast putting out over 900 lumens in best color mode seems almost too bright. On a new bulb I could fill my 166" screen in eco cinema mode with the epson but have not try'd that with the jvc but I already know the jvc is brighter. I think this years JVC's all got natrually brighter because of the inclusion of 3D tech so next years model that you are getting should be a light cannon. If your new JVC is as bright or brighter than mine sherardp then you wont have any problems lighting up that big screen of yours by the time the bulb gets to the end of its life
